Michael Sam kisses another man: OMG, WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN???

Michael Sam had to wait until the final eight picks to get drafted and when the Rams finally called, it was an emotional moment. ESPN cameras were there and filmed him crying and hugging and kissing another man, presumably his boyfriend. It was moving and powerful, and the ignorant hated it.

Look at the picture above for a moment. What do you see? Two human beings expressing genuine affection and happiness? Or are you sickened by two men openly kissing? Do you see happiness and joy…or sin and licentiousness?

Why does it even matter what we think…and since when is love disgusting?

If you’re someone (like University of Texas QB Case McCoy) disgusted by Michael Sam kissing another man, may I humbly suggest you get over yourself. You don’t have to like it, but the reality is that not everyone chooses to live and love as you do. If Michael Sam kisses another man, what business is it of yours? Why do you care? If you’re put off by a genuine display of affection and happiness, I genuinely feel sorry for you. I’d also ask why you feel you have the right to pass judgment on how Sam celebrated? How are you negatively impacted by the sight of two men kissing? Your approval or disapproval is meaningless. What is it you’re really afraid of? Could it be be you’re just that insecure about your own sexuality…and too terrified of the possible consequences to acknowledge it?

The brain-dead reactions displayed on Twitter shows how far we have to go to defeat ignorance, bigotry, and hatred. A century ago it was women. Half a century ago it was African-Americans. Today it’s the LGBT community. Who’s next? Left-handers? Redheads? Packers fans? It’s as if we’re not happy unless we have someone to hate, someone we can self-righteously consider ourselves superior to. Why? Are we that insecure in ourselves and our own sexuality? Do we not feel alive unless we’re hating and discriminating? Why is equality such a frightening concept to so many? Homosexuals aren’t monsters. They’re not out to impose their “agenda” and recruit your children. In most cases, they just want the same things heterosexuals do: freedom, equality, and the right to love whom they choose, all in the hope that one day their humanity will matter far more than their sexuality. Except for their sexuality, they’re like you and me…and their sexuality isn’t within our purview to judge.

Someday, hopefully in my lifetime, a gay football player will be drafted…and no one will notice because it’s no longer symbolic of someone breaking down barriers. This player will be celebrated for his talent, not who and how he loves. Sexuality will become an issue important only to those using it to express their love for another human being.

I hope to live to see the day when people are judged by content of their character and not by who they share their bed with.

Then we can get on the business of finding the next group to hate…because it seems to be what we humans do.
