Another day. Another school shooting. This one hits close to home, at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, 12 miles from where I live. Two students are dead, one of them being the shooter.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before (no…on second thought, don’t), but we have a problem. Yesterday’s tragedy is the 74th school shooting since Sandy Hook. Think about that for a moment- 74 school shootings since 12.14.12; almost exactly once a week. Even the President is exasperated with the intransigence of the NRA, gun nuts, and the Congressmen they own.
He’s right; we should be ashamed…but the people who should be most ashamed care for nothing but the “rights” of gun owners and the gun industry. We should be able to have a rational conversation about common sense gun control, but gun nuts and the NRA refuse to even consider the possibility of compromise, citing (incorrectly), the sacrosanct, inviolable, and immutable nature of the 2nd Amendment, bestowed up ‘Merica by God His Own Self. Meanwhile, their refusal to even consider common sense gun reform (no one’s even talking about taking their guns) continues to manifest itself in the continued ongoing slaughter of innocents. I’d ask how they’re able to live with all that blood on their hands, but if that was a problem for them we’d be well down the road to gun control.
I’m tired of hearing about children cut down by madmen with guns they have no business possessing. I’m tired of parents burying their progeny while gun nuts and the NRA refuse to even consider legal measures that could lessen the possibility of these shootings. More than anything, I’m angry that these shootings happen on average once a week and are barely even newsworthy anymore. They’ve become just so much background noise. America is already well on its way to forgetting Reynolds H.S., and why shouldn’t they? The mass murder traveling gun show will pull into another town in about a week or so.
We should be ashamed, but as long as it’s someone else’s kids….
