I never thought I’d see the day when rescuing an American POW after five years in captivity would be a matter of some debate…and yet here we are. Several Conservatives have conjectured at some length on Fox News Channel and other Right-wing media outlets about whether Bergdahl was even WORTHY of being rescued. After all, he may have been a deserter and perhaps even a traitor. His father speaks Pashto, the language of his son’s captors, and he’s grown a long beard in solidarity with his son.
OH. MY. GOD…. BERGDAHL’S FATHER HAS EVEN EXPRESSED POSITIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT ISLAM. BERGDAHL HIMSELF MAY BE SYMPATHETIC TO ISLAM AND MUSLIMS!! HOW DISGUSTINGLY UNPATRIOTIC AND UNAMERICAN!! OH, THE HORROR OF IT ALL!!!
Yes, talking heads on the Far Right are holding forth in the belief that Bergdahl wasn’t even worth rescuing, and that the deal made with the Taliban was a mistake. The argument goes that we gave up far too much to bring a traitor home, that America doesn’t negotiation with terrorists- especially to repatriate someone allegedly sympathetic to Islam and the cause of his captors.
There can be little more disgusting, more mean-spirited, more lacking in moral fortitude and simple human decency than arguing that Bowe Bergdahl should have been left behind…and that The Black Guy in the White House © screwed up. The repatriation of an American POW shouldn’t be a political issue; it’s a matter of compassion and humanity, qualities the Far Right lacks almost completely. Sadly, for Conservatives EVERYTHING is political, and automatically assuming the worst of The Black Guy in the White House © is de rigger.
Just when I’d begun to think Conservatives couldn’t possibly sink any lower, I’m once again reminded they live in barrel with no bottom. I’d hold forth on why they should be ashamed of themselves, but that would presume they feel shame.
