If Bill Donohue's a Christian...well, Hail Satan!

Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights president and noted bigot Bill Donahue took issue with a recent New York Times editorial about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, specifically relating to Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, who’s accused of sexually abusing young boys in the Dominican Republic.

Donahue released a very creepy statement in which he said “The Times erred again by repeating the myth of a pedophilia scandal: 100 percent of the victimizers were male; 81 percent of the victims were male; and 78 percent were postpubescent. That would make it a homosexual scandal. Indeed, less than 5 percent of these cases involve pedophilia.” He finished by stating “The boys the archbishop abused were teenagers, meaning that homosexuality, not pedophilia, was in play. The distinction is important.”

Some of the boys abused were as young as 12. Mr. Donahue’s assertion that the sexual assault of pre-teens doesn’t count as pedophilia is not only disgusting, but it’s an obvious attempt to shift focus off the bungling by the hierarchy of the Catholic Church as it relates to the scandal. Homosexuality, while a bad word to them, isn’t nearly as bad as pedophilia. He knows that the words homosexuality and pedophilia hit the ear much differently. Pedophilia immediately makes one think of children who are unable to legally give consent, in this case children who were being preyed on by someone in a position of authority.

As long as pedophiles have an apologist in people like Donahue (and the Vatican, as they shielded Wesolowski from prosecution outside of the Vatican) the abuse of children will continue, with the abusers facing no actions other than being defrocked. And there is NO distinction to be made on that point, Mr. Donahue.
