Who Would Jesus Hate? Bill Donohue says he knows.

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Bill Donohue

Facing an onslaught of federal courts striking down bans on same-sex marriage, Catholic League President Bill Donohue has called upon Catholics to support a constitutional marriage amendment stating marriage may only be between one man and one woman. Invoking the words of President Barack Obama who said in 2004 “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God’s in the mix,” Donohue claims “God got thrown from the mix in 2012″ when Obama ran for reelection. According to Donohue, the president “tossed God again” this week when he called for same-sex marriage to be recognized as a constitutional right.

If nothing else, Bill Donohue has over the years provided a lot of material for me to work with. The voice and face of the Catholic League, which seems to exist solely as means to legitimize his considerable rage and vitriol, Donohue is a hatefest looking for a place to happen. Seemingly possessed of but one emotion- a constant, barely contained rage that leaves but a burst artery in his brain away from a complete meltdown, Donohue is an anger ball of the first order. Yes, a truer example of God’s love there never was…if by “God’s love” you mean “Kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out.”

While he vents his spleen about “returning power to the people,” current polling has shown that 59% of Americans support same-sex marriage, compared with 27% in 2011. Clearly, Donohue’s definition of “people” is limited to those who think and hate as he does. Those more tolerant souls are dead to him, of no consequence because they clearly don’t understand God’s truth as he does…and he’s just arrogant enough to discount anyone so unenlightened they’d dare disagree with him.

So how about at least being honest about your agenda, Bill? It’s about “returning power to the people (who believe God to be an angry, intolerant, and vindictive S.O.B.”

Donohue, whose organization was once described by comedian Kathy Griffin as “one guy with a computer,” has previously claimed “…the whole purpose of marriage is to have a family It’s not about making people happy. It’s not about love,” before adding “…the idea of two men getting married is the most bizarre idea in human history.”

I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult to accept the worldview of a man who sees that world as a miserable, evil place controlled by Liberals and homosexuals. “It’s not about making people happy? It’s not about love?” If you remove love and happiness from marriage, what the Hell’s the point? I’m sorry that Donohue’s own existence seems to be self-perceived as so thoroughly miserable and joyless, but I’d have to categorically reject his version of Christianity. Yes, having a family is important to some, but without love and happiness, raising a family would be drudgery. What’s a family but an invitation to experience and enjoy love and happiness? If it was all and only about perpetuating the species, few would subject themselves such a long-term commitment.

The idea that “everyone knows” marriage isn’t about love or happiness is as arrogant as it is absurd. If not for unfocused rage, I’m not even certain Donohue would have a “go to” emotion. As it is, he’s one of the best advertisements for atheism we have. The very fact of marriage is that it’s a celebration of love and happiness. It that wasn’t the case, why not just have the government assign spouses and inform couples how many children the state expects them to raise?

Oh, and as for “the idea of two men getting married” being “the most bizarre idea in human history,” I have but one suggestion for Donohue: Love. Try it sometime; you might actually find that you like it. Though in your case, your heart’s been so hardened by hate and self-righteous rage that I can’t imagine you’re capable experiencing or giving love.
