As one who doesn’t believe in God, I find the argument that we need not care for environment since the Rapture is nigh to be as arrogant as it is ignorant. If you’re a Christian, even if you believe that the Rapture is going to happen soon (which, by the way, believers have clung to for hundreds upon hundreds of years), how can you justify the desecration of the environment provided for Mankind by your Lord and Savior? IF the Rapture is almost upon us, why would you need exploit and desecrate the environment? You’re not going to be able to take material wealth with you, right? And if your treasure is to be found in Heaven, why would you concern yourself with worldly wealth?
Silly me; I grew up being taught that thoughtful stewardship was a basic part of Christian thought- the idea that we honor God by respecting the world He created and treating it with care and kindness. Now being Christian means raping the Earth for its resources because we’re all (Christians only, of course) going to be swept off to Glory before too much longer? If you believe that God created Heaven and Earth…which even a heathen like myself understands to be a basic tenet of Christianity…how could you possibly condone the trashing and desecration of the environment in the name of greed and avarice…and oh, yeah, the coming Rapture?
There’s a disturbing- and highly hypocritical- trend towards shameless self-interest in the theology of the American Taliban. They firmly believe that the Rapture is nigh, and yet they continue to firmly oppose environmental rules and regulations designed to prevent businesses from raping the environment and profiting handsomely from it. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Mordor) has set that one of his top priorities is to kneecap the Enivronmental Protection Agency. Evidently, the right of Big Business to destroy the environment in the name of ever greater profits comes straight out of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Except that- if I remember my Sunday School lessons correctly- those swept up by the Rapture aren’t going to be able to take their worldly wealth with them…and that won’t matter to those who truly believe.
So is this really about the Rapture…or just about using Jesus’ impending return as an excuse to claim the imprimatur of the Almighty as justification for your unchecked greed and avarice?
As if you really need to think about that holy hypocrisy for more than a nanosecond….
