Today's moment of truth: Christian terrorists are a bigger problem than Islamofascist zealots

You’re convinced that all (and only) Muslims are terrorists, dedicated to killing Americans because they hate us for our freedom? Perhaps you believe that Christians engaging in acts of heinous violence aren’t terrorists but merely angry souls crying out for help? Never mind the hypocrisy, right?

You might just want to rethink your self-delusion, Kimosabe, because since 9.11, far more Americans have died in terror attacks committed by Christians than by Muslims. I know; the truth can be SO inconvenient and hurtful sometimes, eh?

Or have you been so thoroughly indoctrinated by the talking heads at Fox News Channel that you’ve given into the propaganda that Muslims are terrorists, while Christians merely engage in misguided acts of politically-motivated violence?

The following (by no means exhaustive) list hopefully will disabuse you of the notion that only Muslims can be considered to be terrorists and/or religious extremists:

  1. The people at the Waco Siege were Christians.
  2. Benjamin Nathaniel Smith, a man who shot 11 people in a 3-day killing spree, was a Christian.
  3. Army of God, a terrorist organization that bombs abortion clinics, are Christians.
  4. Heaven’s Gate), a mass suicide group, were Christians.
  5. Peoples Temple, a group responsible for murder and over 900 suicides, was a Christian organization.
  6. The Wisconsin Sikh Temple shooter, Wade Michael Page, was a Christian.
  7. Jim David Adkisson, the Knoxville Unitarian Universalist Church shooter, was a Christian.
  8. John Salvi, the Brookline Planned Parenthood shooter was a Christian.
  9. Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City Bomber, the most notorious terrorist attack before 9/11, was raised Christian and still strongly believed in God.
  10. Amy Bishop, the University of Alabama Huntsville shooter was a Christian.
  11. Charles Roberts, he 2006 Amish School shooter was “angry at God,” but still a proclaimed Christian.
  12. Mitchell Scott Johnson, one of the Westside Middle School shooters, is a Christian.
  13. The Ku Klux Klan is a predominantly Christian group.
  14. Clayton Waagner, who threatened to kill all abortion providers with anthrax, is a Christian
  15. James Kopp, a man who sniped a women’s clinic doctor, is a Christian.
  16. Adolf Hitler was a self-proclaimed Christian. In his speeches he often said that he was “doing Christianity a great service by pushing [Jews] out of schools and public functions.” He later killed six million Jews.
  17. Scott Roeder, who assassinated abortion provided Dr. George Tiller in the vestibule of Tiller’s church, is a Christian.

I could add to the list with a little digging, of course, but I think I’ve made my point.

Perhaps the next time you want to protest in anger when a group of Muslims propose building a mosque, you might try taking a good, long look in the mirror. It could be a good exercise in gaining some self-knowledge to learn (or admit to) exactly what it is you’re afraid of.

America’s terrorism problem isn’t about Islam or Muslims. It’s about good, God-fearing White Christians who fervently belief it’s time to “take our country back.” The sooner we admit to the truth, the sooner we can begin to address the problem.
