Texas: Where hatred and ignorance are the coin of the realm

Protesters, upset that a Muslim group was holding a conference at a Texas conference center owned by the local school district, showed up last night waving flags and signs telling attendees, “Go home and take Obama with you.”…. The conference, titled “Stand With the Prophet Against Terror and Hate,” was being being put on as a fundraiser for a Chicago-based Islamic group, Sound Vision, and approximately about 500 attendees were expected, reports NBC-DFW. Holding signs saying “You are not Americans. Don’t fly our flag,” protesters complained about the Garland Independent School District allowing the group to use the facility…. “We pay our taxes to that school, and I don’t want them here,” one woman, Lavona Martindale said.

God bless America, right? Because what sort of good, God-fearing, ‘Merica-loving, gun-fondling patriot is going to want to stand idly by while a group of Muslimaniac terrorist sympathizers raise money for those who want to kill us? Besides, if they were meant to be in this country, they’d be White and Christian.

Amiright???

The is the sort of thing that makes me ashamed to be an American. When Americans can insult other Americans based on their religion and skin color…well, the terrorists have clearly and overwhelmingly triumphed. The sheer stupidity behind this protest is so overwhelming that it’s difficult to even know where to start. When a bunch of ignorant, hateful, angry White Folks get together, The Stoopid is bound to overflow…and in this case, you’d best bring your hip waders.

Instead of considering the reason for the conference (peaceful co-existence), the haters immediately defaulted to playing the “all Muslims are terrorists” card. Never mind that most of the conference attendees were American citizens, with the same rights the protesters reserve for themselves. When it comes to being an American, White does NOT make right. Nor does pretending to be a Christian. An Muslim-American with dark skin has the same rights as any other American, regardless of what the protesters might believe. There are no “real Americans,” there are only Americans. NO ONE gets to determine who is and isn’t worthy of being considered a “real American.”

Another protester, identified as Greg McKinley, said, “We’re here to stand up for the American way of life from a faction of people who are trying to destroy us.”

McKinley added, “If they want to live their life like the middle east, they can go back to the middle east.”

To Mr. McKinley, I would only say, “If you want to live your life like you’re an ignorant, hateful redneck, you can go back to Texarkana.” Standing up for the “American way of life?” I wonder if McKinley could even describe what that is in a way that makes sense? I doubt it.

“I want for people to see that we are kind peaceful people,” explained conference attendee Page Spence. “We’re not here to fight, we’re not here to argue. We’re just here to show that we’re Americans too.”

A young woman, part of a group of counter-protesters, explained, “People are here to stand up with the Prophet against hate and intolerance.”

Not that the protesters could have been bothered to set aside their hate long enough to realize this, but many (if not most, perhaps even all) of those attending the conference were American citizens, some complete with real American-sounding names. They were there because the supported the conference’s message of peace and reconciliation. They pay taxes, just like the protesters. Being White and pretending to be a Christian doesn’t come with the right to discriminate against those whose faith and beliefs you can’t be bothered to understand.

I’m stunned that a group of angry White Folks sincerely believe themselves to be superior beings, possessed of the right to discriminate against those they believe to be “less than,” even though those people are also Americans. They might be shocked to be told this, but they don’t “own” America. It’s not their place to determine who gets to enjoy the benefits of being an American.

They did do a bang-up job of displaying their hatred, ignorance, and intolerance for the world to see. Well played, y’all…and now we know why this country is turning into an idiocracy.
