If Mike Huckabee is a Christian...well, that's a good enough reason for me not to be

Washington (CNN)Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee says expecting Christians to accept same-sex marriage is “like asking someone who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped shrimp in their deli.”…. He also called homosexuality a lifestyle choice, like drinking and swearing [and he] defended an excerpt from his new book in which he says he has friends and associates who are gay. People can be my friends who have lifestyles that are not necessarily my lifestyle. I don’t shut people out of my circle or out of my life because they have a different point of view,” Huckabee told CNN’s Dana Bash, while deflecting a question about whether he believes being gay is a choice.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Mike Huckabee isn’t being a dick, spreading homophobia and a bastardized Christianity in the pursuit of political power. Let’s pretend that he’s right, that homosexuality is a choice, like so many aspects of life. I know; it’s offensive and objectionable, but work with me here for a moment, willya?

If you’re going to argue that homosexuality is a choice, then surely being a homophobic bigot and a religious tyrant is also a choice. The question I’d ask Huckabee is what makes one choice (his) morally superior to the other (homosexuality)? His choice is about hatred, bigotry, and divisiveness in the name of his bastardized, self-serving Christianity. Homosexuality is about what two consenting adults choose to do. It’s about sexuality, love, and the uniquely human desire to share a connection with another. There’s nothing evil or dirty about that; it’s part and parcel of the human existence. Gays just happen to be wired differently than Huckabee. No reasonable person would think it appropriate to stand watch in Huckabee’s bedroom while he’s having sex with his wife. Why, then, does he believe he has the right to police what other consenting adults do? It’s none of his g——-n business, yet he, like so many other authoritarian Christians, believe that their sexuality is the One, True, and Only.

Despite what Huckabee may choose to believe, those of us who disagree with him and his ilk don’t want to “shut them down.” Only our expectation and demand is that they recognize they have no right to impose their views and standards on others. Ah, but that would require them to jettison their arrogance and self-righteousness…which ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.

“I’d like to think that there’s room in America for people who have different points of view without screaming and shouting and wanting to shut their businesses down,” he said. “What worries me in this new environment we’re in, it’s not just that someone might disagree, they don’t want to argue with me, even take a different point of view. They want to close someone’s business down.”

No, that’s not at all what we want. It’s the bigots who’re playing the martyrdom card. What we want is for so-called “Christians” to recognize that their beliefs do NOT afford them the right to discriminate against those who happen to believe, live, and love differently. If you have a business which caters to the general public, you simply don’t have the right to refuse service to someone because you disapprove of their lifestyle.

Flip the tables for a moment. What if you, a born-again Christian, went to a restaurant whose owner happened to be a militant atheist who refuses to serve Christians? I’d wager that you’d be screaming “Discrimination!!” before your water was poured. You’d be incensed that someone would DARE to discriminate against someone who believes in God. Yet you’d have no problem using your religion to deny service to someone based on their lifestyle?

No hypocrisy here, people. Move along….

People like Huckabee believe in freedom and liberty…for themselves. They believe themselves to be the Chosen Ones, enlightened enough to believe in Jesus Christ and His (alleged) no-homosexuals-need-apply theology. It’s as arrogant as it is inaccurate. Then again, all Huckabee seems to care about is his political prospects. If he believes success lies in appealing to those who think like him, he’s going to lay it on thick for them. And so he is.

If Mike Huckabee’s a Christian, I’m Cleopatra, Queen of Denial.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
