THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Pastor Logan Robertson

Meet Pastor Logan Robertson of the Westcity Bible Baptist Church in Auckland, New Zealand…. Pastor Robertson is married, has three children, and told a Christian who wrote a book about reconciling his faith with being gay, “I pray that you will commit suicide, you filthy fag.”…. Jim Marjoram, author of It’s Life Jim, sent Pastor Robertson information about his new book…. “We are not interested in your filthy lifestyle or book,” the Independent Baptist preacher responded via email. “The Bible says you are vile, strange (queer), reprobate, filth, sodomite, natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed.”…. “I pray that you will commit suicide, you filthy fag. Robertson is unrepentant and does not believe he did anything wrong.

Before anyone (you know who you are) accuses me of Christian bashing, let me just state for the record that I recognize that our hero isn’t exactly representative of mainstream Christianity. Yeah, I get it…yadayadayada…. Of course, the reality is that Pastor Logan Robertson is charged with leading a church, so guess what’s he doing, right? I’ll bet you dollars to doughnuts he’s not preaching acceptance and tolerance.

So much for Christian charity, right? Oh, and perhaps pastor Robertson could tell me exactly where in the Bible it shows Jesus preaching against homosexuality? And while he’s at it, perhaps he could also show me where He teaches that wishing for someone to kill themselves because of their sexuality is the Christian thing to do?

If you believe in karma as I do, you have to believe that Pastor Robertson will get his comeuppance down the road. For now, I really have to wonder what it is he’s so afraid of? And how can he reconcile the hatred and calumny he directs toward gays with the teachings of his Lord and Savior?

My favorite part of this whole story, though, was the line from his Facebook page:

“Truth is Hate to those who Hate the Truth.”

Like I haven’t heard that from a certain member of my own family a few times. In Robertson’s case, he’d be well-served to keep in mind that, particularly as a man of the cloth, hate isn’t the truth.

The “truth” in this case is all about hating your fellow man, which seems a particularly unChristian state of mind. Then again, when your mind is closed to all but your own narrow, ignorant, fear-based belief system, proclaiming the “truth” means never having to entertain competing ideas.

Or worry about what Jesus Christ actually taught.

Stay classy, eh??
