Cafeteria Christianity at its finest

What do you think Jesus would say about the lazy liberal poor in America? Join FOX & Friends Weekend tomorrow as we welcome poverty experts Joni Ernst, Donald J. Trump, and Mitt Romney as we discuss how American poor people want to take everyone’s rights away.

Like a lot of rational, sensible people, I read this and my first thought was, “There’s now way this isn’t satire.” I looked down in the comments to get a sense of the tone, and saw a response from the page owner: “No it’s not.” (My favorite comment: “According to Leviticus, if Joni sleeps in her house while menstruating, she’s an abomination in the eyes of God.”) Given that this Facebook page has only 3,300 likes (and appears to have been taken down), I’m going to lean towards believing this site is satire…but who knows what the truth is anymore? When you’re Fox News Channel, it seems fabricated truth and unintended satire walk hand in hand. And it’s not as if there aren’t a significant portion of the American Taliban who don’t think like this.

That being the case, my first thought was W…T…F??? I probably shouldn’t be taken aback by this, but I find it shocking that there are actually people- who report the news as “fair and balanced,” no less- who can with a straight face and no sense of shame say, “lazy liberal poor in America.” How callous and insensitive must one be in order to honestly believe that poor people (Liberals, of course, because no good, God-fearing Conservative patriot would EVER allows themselves to be poor) want to “take everyone’s rights away?” I know people who actually believe this sort of thing; they’re convinced that social programs are merely handouts to lazy poors who can’t be bothered to get off their asses and do for themselves. Evidently, “survival of the fittest” is an easy thing to believe in when you’re one of the fittest and you’ve never had to walk a mile in any other kind of shoes.

Whether this Facebook page is well-camouflaged satire or a serious expression of a callous, inhuman view of the world, the fact is that there are people on the right who really believe this sort of thing. I can only hope they never find themselves, unemployed, sick, or disabled; I suspect they might find themselves singing a different tune should life deal them a poor hand.
