I have significant philosophical issues with many figures on the Far Right, which should take no one who’s hung around these parts for some time. More than ideological differences, though, what upsets me are the arrogant souls who have no problem with being a dick, perhaps out of a belief that those who disagree with them aren’t worthy of being treated with kindness or dignity.
Number One on my hit parade is Ted Nugent, a real hero for many on the Right, including a member of my own family. I’ve long since come to terms with a blood relation elevating a dick to the status of a prophet or hero, but it is what it is. I’ve always believed that the people you admire are a reflection on the kind of person you are. If you believe a dick to be someone to admire…well, you can figure that one out.
Instead of trying to figure out how we might all be able to figure out how to get along, misanthropes like Nugent take dickishness to new depths. What he has to be proud of escapes me, but he seems to see himself as a fine specimen of humanity. The fact that many admire Nugent and believe he speaks the truth is but one of the reasons I fear for the future of the Republic.
If being a dick is a wave of the future, we’re in worse shape than I’d imagined.
