The American Taliban: Membership has its privileges

What bothers me about Josh Duggar is not so much that he molested five young girls, including his sisters, dating back to when he was 14. Boys do stupid things; entitled and indulged boys learn early on that women were put on Earth by God to satiate their sexual urges. Women are the property of men, so why wouldn’t Duggar feel that molesting young girls is merely one of the fringe benefits of being a Christian?

No, what I find truly disturbing is the double standard extant in the responses by others in the American Taliban, many of whom are willing to give him a free pass because…wait for it…boys will be boys. I can’t help but wonder what might have happened if Duggar was an atheist in the public eye. It doesn’t seem a stretch to believe that the weeping and gnashing of teeth would be heard from sea to shining sea? Evidently, being a Christian means that Duggar isn’t perfect, just forgiven.

I can’t help but wonder if anyone’s given any thought to the welfare of the girls Duggar molested? They were the victims in this instance, not Duggar- though to listen to many of his Quiverfull compatriots, you’d think he was being persecuted by the media.

I like to think I try to be a forgiving and tolerant person, but I have an exceedingly difficult time with that when it comes to religious hypocrisy and double standards.

The Duggar Girls Learned to Kiss From Jim-Bob and Josh: Incest is the game the whole family can play. I didn’t think that’s what “family values” meant, but Christians aren’t perfect- just forgiven.

Creationist: If evolution is true, then it wasn’t wrong for Josh Duggar to molest his sisters: What are sisters for if not for sexual gratification? In a world where women are considered to be the property of men, it’s not “molestation,” it’s “learning how to get your needs taken care of.”

Jessa Duggar’s Father-in-Law, Michael Seewald, Pens Essay in Wake of Josh Duggar Molestation Scandal: ‘I’m Rooting for You’**: Boys will be boys, right? And criminal behavior shouldn’t have consequences if the offender comes from a good Christian family. If you’re an outsider, it’s “criminal sexual abuse.” If you’re a club member, it’s “exploring your sexuality.”

Hobby Lobby billionaire behind the Christian counseling center that treated Josh Duggar: Membership has its privileges, especially when it comes to Christians helping other Christians paper over unpleasant realities and peccadilloes.

Josh Duggar Didn’t Make a “Mistake,” He Committed a Crime: Those outside the club call it what it is: child sexual abuse. It’s not a “youthful indiscretion;” it’s a felony.

A lot of Republicans who want to be president got their picture taken with a child molester: Now THAT’S real leadership, eh?

GOP ally suggests criminal charges for police chief who released Duggar sex abuse report: Sounds like someone broke the unspoken code of silence.

Hey, Remember That Time Josh Duggar Made a Joke About Incest On TV?: At the time it was merely not funny. Now it appears it may have been an epic example of a pronounced lack of self-awareness and entitlement.

Five scary evangelical Christian teachings which set the Duggar family up for the molestation disaster: The outside world knows it as child sexual abuse. Evangelicals call it “family values.”

Mom of gun-toting Quiverfull family: 14-year-old Josh Duggar was ‘playing doctor,’ so leave him alone: Boys will be boys…and as long as it’s kept in the family, what’s the problem?

Quiverfull of Shit: a Guide to the Duggars’ Scary Brand of Christianity: Quiverfull is less about the teachings of Jesus Christ than it is a construct for subjugating women and defining them as responsible for satisfying the urges of men and keeping house for them.

Montel Williams blasts Josh Duggar, Tony Perkins as ‘hypocrites, charlatans’ in epic Facebook rant: Williams is spot on; if these charlatans are living Christ-like lives, I’m the Queen of Denmark.
