This week in God: The silliness can be overwhelming at times

I don’t begrudge anyone their right to believe whatever it may be that gives their lives meaning and purpose. Some folks need to have something- a greater purpose, a Supreme Being, a cosmic force- to focus their energies on and guide how they live their lives. As long as that’s used for good, to make the world a better, more peaceful and just place…well, knock yourself out, eh? These days, though, that seems too often not to be the focus of religious faith- in particular American Christianity. Turns out there are WAY too few people wanting to make the world a better place, so anyone looking to have that sort of impact is someone I can get behind.

Then there are those for whom religious faith is a club, a bludgeon with which to attack others not “enlightened” enough to believe as they do. It becomes “I’m better than you” which too often morphs into the belief that if you refuse to believe and live as someone else does, you are “less than” and in some cases worthy only of death. It’s not hard to understand why I refer to these zealots as the American Taliban.

I don’t believe in God, but I do remember enough about my Sunday School days to recall that the God I was taught about was someone for whom love, tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion were the Prime Directive. That seems to have been lost somewhere along the way.

Here are the 5 most appalling ‘Christian’ defenses of the Duggars: If you love double standards, live for hypocrisy, and think hyper-religious, self-righteous doublespeak is just about the best thing EVER, you’ll be WAY entertained by this one. Just be sure you don’t take a big swallow of coffee before reading…or you could just cover your laptop in plastic in case of a coffee-spew emergency.

How Atheists (and Satanists) are Flipping Right-Wing Christian Bigotry on Its Head: You can only be turned into an evil, anti-Christian monster if you allow them to define you as something other than human beings. Sometimes that means taking the fight to the haters posing as Christians.

Dan Savage wants to make Duggar the new Santorum: ‘Clearly duggary needs to be a word’: From the man who redefined Santorum comes another spot on foray into etymology: “Hold my Bible while I DUGGAR you.”

‘He Said It Only Happened One Time’: Cop Says Jim Bob Duggar Lied About Josh Molesting Girls: When you get right down to it, authoritarian Christians will lie, cheat, and steal like anyone else. The rules they espouse are for others, and they protect their own when they get into trouble. Consequences are for losers, Liberals, and atheists.

Woman calls bullsh*t on pastor’s claims that he raised her brother from the dead during church service: What good is an Imaginary Friend if he/she can’t be used for fund-raising purposes??

Jesus Is a Political Prisoner: An American History of Christianity’s Corruption: I suspect that if Jesus Christ were to alight on Earth today, He’d barely recognize his own religion.

Jon Stewart calls Rand Paul out on ‘religious freedom’: Don’t Christians sell cakes to adulterers?: Being a Christian doesn’t mean having the right to discriminate against those you find “icky” or objectionable. Jesus taught tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion…but too many “Christians” can’t be bothered to put in the effort to lead Christ-like lives.

Five F-cked-up Evangelical Christian Teachings Which Set JimBob & Michelle’s Family Up For the Josh Duggar Molestation Disaster: Somewhere warm and breezy, Jesus weeps softly but uncontrollably into His Dos Equis.

Pastor caught having gay sex in van spent stolen church money on farmer dating website: police: How is he supposed to preach against the evils of homosexuality if he hasn’t experienced the evil himself?

Meet the Christian Right’s Favorite Doomsday Prophet — and His Insane, Apocalyptic ‘Blood Moon’ Theory: John Hagee would seem to be the very anti-Christ he preaches about, someone for whom the teachings of the Gospel are far less about love, tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion, than oppression, destruction, and hatred in the name of his Lord and Savior.

Colorado school booted teacher for opposing ‘Jesus pizza’ Bible studies during lunch: lawsuit: Your tax dollars hard at work…turning a public school into a Christian indoctrination center.

Christian Game Developer Launches Game to ‘Shoot’ LGBT People: It’s all what Jesus taught- love, tolerance, acceptance, inclusion- except when its not.

‘They’re seeing angels and devils at work’: Ex-Quiverfull member explains Duggar response to sex abuse: When you’re arrogant and self-righteous enough to believe the entire world is out to get you because you’re so godly, this is probably about what one might reasonably expect.

6 of the Most Horrifying Examples of the Duggars’ Homophobia: Treating people as “less than” because they live and love differently: EXACTLY what Jesus would have done.

Quiverfull author delivers melodramatic defense of Duggars against ‘pagans and gullible Christians’: Only “real” Christians like Jim Bob Duggar truly know what Jesus would do…and that would evidently mean covering up the crimes committed by his teenage son.
