It’s been said that religion is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Judging by the state of Christianity in America today, that’s truer than ever. While I realize that the majority of Christians are good and decent folks who actually make an effort to live their beliefs, I see religion as responsible for most of what’s wrong with the world today. Watch the evening news, and it won’t take you long to understand where my belief comes from. Whether it’s ISIS/ISIL, radical Jewish extremists in Israel, or the American Taliban, religion has become less about peaceful co-existence than a means for sociopaths, authoritarians, and power-hungry tyrants to exert control over the weak and gullible.
I don’t believe in God, primarily because my experience has been that all religion does is make things worse. It’s a perfectly good concept that’s been bastardized and corrupted by those who believe their world view is and must be the One, True, and ONLY permissible belief system. That so many are so willing to kill those who don’t believe as they do tells me everything I need to know about the belief in an Imaginary Friend. These scoundrels have done nothing to disabuse me of that notion.
