The WARTs (White Angry Racist Teabaggers) of the GOP continues. This is the new face of the GOP and a series that will continue until the GOP takes back their party. HISD has just opened a new Arabic Immersion Magnet School which teaches in Arabic and English. It follows their opening of a Mandarin school, and plans for a French and Hindi school. A few of the GOP’s finest WARTs came to protest the kindergarten kids. From the Houston Chronicle: “Houston is the energy capital of the world,” said HISD superintendent Terry Grier during an impromptu media tour of the school Monday morning. “And we need to have graduates who can communicate with people all over the world.”
I’ve long decried our collective national ignorance and disdain for those who look, think, believe, live, and/or love differently than what might be considered the norm by some. We can’t be bothered to love and accept, which is actually pretty easy to do…but we have no problem with hatred and discrimination, which requires a good deal more energy and effort and is far more vexing and emotionally taxing. This story is an example of how WARTs have taken over the Republican Party. One of our two major political parties is now beholden to angry, ignorant, low information White trolls who believe that God is on their side and yet have no capacity for the things the Jesus Christ of their Bible actually taught- compassion, tolerance, understanding, and acceptance.
So much of our current politics is dominated by rage-addicted WARTS, who, without someone or something to wax indignant about, would probably feel useless and irrelevant. They refuse to tolerate anything not reflective of a power structure dominated by Conservative, xenophobic, racist White Christian patriots. Anything and anyone that doesn’t fit into that narrow spectrum is deemed a threat and must be destroyed before it destroys ‘Merica.
This hatred is characterized by one of the protest signs: “Everything I ever cared to know about Islam was taught to me by Muslims on 9-11-2001.” Never mind that Americans are FAR more likely to be killed by domestic acts of terror, most often committed by people who look like them. Ah, but White Christians by definition can’t be terrorists, but ALL Muslims ARE terrorists who wish for nothing more than to bring violent jihad to our shores. And the “Everything I cared to know” bit? Yeah, that aggressive, prideful ignorance pretty much sums up the raison d’etre of WARTs.
These are the people who believe they were ordained by God to lead this country- angry White racists who hate everyone unfortunate enough to not be like them. It’s pitiful, really; it’s got to be hard going through life carrying so much anger and hatred day in and day out. It eventually will- and does- turn those thus afflicted into truly miserable excuses for humanity- the sort of troglodytes who’d opposed education designed to help people better understand their world.
Hatred is a choice, as is love. Love is easy and costs nothing; hatred will only leave the bearer with a nasty case of WARTs. This isn’t a new phenomenon, of course; there has always been a rich vein of ignorance evident in public life. With the advent of the Internet, there are just more outlets for the Stupid…and if there’s one thing Stupid loves, it’s attention.
