A little light housekeeping before we exit stage left

Today marks a couple of milestones I want to acknowledge and celebrate. First, it’s the 14th birthday of WWJD. This blog first started as The People’s Republic of Seabrook, named for the small town on the Texas Gulf Coast I was living in at the time. It all began as a way for me to kill time. I was a contract technical writer at Enron headquarters in downtown Houston, and as our contract was running out (shortly before the company imploded), I had to come up with ever more creative ways to look busy in order that my firm could continue charging for billable hours.

Long story short (because it’s been told and retold umpteen gazillion times), I started TPRS as a way to write and to ensure I looked busy. There was no way I could have imagined the passion/obsession/timesuck this would evolve into. Fourteen years on, I have readers from all over the world, which never ceases to astonish and humble me. The idea that someone could be sitting at a laptop in Vilnius, Lithuania, reading my writing is something I hope I’ll never take for granted.

I have no idea when it will end, but I’ve always promised myself that I’d walk away from my keyboard when it stops being fun. It’s still fun, so I suspect I’ll be here for some time to come. I hope y’all will keep coming back; knowing I have readers from hither to yon is a pretty special feeling, and not something I take lightly. I hope to see all y’all here for a very long time.

Second, Erin and I are leaving on our honeymoon today. We’ll be gone for two weeks- five days in Iceland, the rest in Bergen and Oslo, Norway. My intent is to enjoy having Erin to myself for a couple weeks and to enjoy traveling to places neither of us have been to before. I have NO idea what I’ll be doing in this space over those two weeks- perhaps posting pictures, but I do know that part of my plan is to take at least a mini-vacation from my keyboard. I’ve got no specific plans to take the time off altogether, but trust me when I say that WWJD isn’t going to be a priority. I may turn my blog into a travel website for a couple weeks…or I may not. The plan is to make it up as I go. Stay tuned….
