It Gets Better...especially when you can troll the haters, bigots, and homophobes

MY NEW HERO

Mike Melgaard

Facebook hero Mike Melgaard is at it again! You may remember him from when he trolled homophobes objecting to Target’s decision to do away with gender labelling of toys by pretending to be Target’s customer service rep. Melgaard’s got a new customer service “job”. This time, he’s helping out Doritos fend off people upset with their new rainbow Dorito campaign.See, if you send $10 to It Gets Better, you’d get a free bag of rainbow-colored Doritos. Neat, huh? Unfortunately, certain people — let’s call them jerks — don’t like this promotion and have been vocal on Doritos’ Facebook page. Melgaard “helped” by taking some of the complaints himself… but sadly, Doritos didn’t appreciate him and deleted his comments… but not before they were screen-capped for posterity!

I find it fascinating that so many people are so concerned about what other people do (or might be doing) behind closed doors. These folks believe that they- and only they- have the right to define what is and isn’t appropriate and proper private sexual behavior. Perhaps if they devoted that righteous fury to attending to their own house or, even better, trying to make the world a better place, there’d be less strife and conflict in this world.

Of course, if you can’t beat ‘em, you might as well avail yourself of opportunities to embarrass and ridicule ‘em….

After taking on trolls when Target did away with gender labeling of toys, Mike Melgaard worked his magic again, posing as Doritos customer service in order to troll those haters ready and willing to splash their bigotry and homophobia across the Internet. Regardless of what you might think of Melgaard’s tactics (I, for one, find them awesome and highly entertaining), if you’re willing to demonstrate your homophobia on Facebook, you can’t claimed to be surprised when you’re exposed, ridiculed, and trolled for maximum entertainment value.

In spite of…or perhaps BECAUSE of…the collective ire of homophobes, It Gets Better’s fundraising effort has been quite successful. There’s still time to donate to a cause committed to pissing off haters and homophobes helping prevent suicides among LGBT teenagers. How this could possibly be interpreted as a bad thing only serves to highlight what truly miserable excuses for humanity some of the haters can be.

Love won…and it will continue to win. Every time a group like It Gets Better helps convince an LGBT teen they have much to live for, it’s a victory. A more cynical person might come to the conclusion that the haters and homophobes incensed and offended by this campaign have no problem with the idea of LGBT teens taking their own lives. I’d like to think that isn’t true…but judging by some of the ignorant, hateful responses, it’s difficult to avoid any other conclusion.

It shouldn’t matter who or how you love. It should only matter that you DO love. The world would certainly be a better place if the haters and homophobes would realize that prejudice and antipathy based on one’s sexuality solves nothing. If you’re opposed to homosexuality, that’s your prerogative. You’re free to not have sexual relations with and/or not marry a person of the same gender…but that’s where your rights end. You don’t get to tell others what lifestyle choices and/or private sexual behaviors are appropriate and permissible.

Unless you’re TRYING to prove what an ugly, mean-spirited human being you really are.
