My God has a SERIOUS anger management problem

The organizer of the “National Religious Liberties Conference” in Des Moines, Iowa, announced today that Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal have committed to speaking at the summit, which will take place next month. One speaker at the conference, Iowa radio host Steve Deace, has said that Ben Carson has also RSVP’d for the event, although Carson’s name was not included in today’s press release. Kevin Swanson, the conference’s chief organizer, is a far-right pastor and host of the “Generations Radio” program, on which he has frequently claimed that the government should put gay people to death, warned that the Girl Scouts and the movie “Frozen” turn girls into lesbians and blamed natural disasters on gay people and women who wear pants. (Update: Swanson is not the only activist speaking at the conference who backs the death penalty for homosexuality).

I know; moral midgets are as much about spreading the love of Jesus Christ as Ted Kaczynski was about using explosives for peaceful purposes and Ted Bundy was about healthy male-female relationships. Swanson’s God is an angry, vindictive, mean-spirited God who would smite anything and anyone in his path if given half a chance. If you can with no trace if irony or sense of the absurd blame natural disasters on the LGBT community and women who wear pants, what’s to stop him from blaming the Chicago Cubs World Series drought on men who sit down to pee?

This is the sort of thing I’m truly beginning to tire of. I’ve written about “Christians” like Swanson whose faith is predicated on anger, exclusion, hatred, and homophobia…when the Lord and Savior they profess to revere preached love, tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion. That Swanson has attracted a following (haters always seem to…along with their money) is testament to just how little many who call themselves “Christians” actually know (or care) about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They pray publicly and loudly, they sit in church pews on Sunday morning, comfortable and smug in their pious self-righteous…even as they demonstrate a complete disdain for Christian charity and tolerance.

That Swanson and his ilk have the claws into three Republican Presidential candidates should be enough to scare the bejeezus out of every American who believes in the separation of Church and State and opposes the creation of a theocracy. For Swanson, it’s not so much about the teachings of Jesus Christ, which are useful to him only as a smokescreen. It’s far more about political power and gaining the ability to impose his will on all Americans. It’s not about Christianity- no one seriously advocating for the execution of homosexuals- could credibly claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. It IS about creating a authoritarian theocracy in which people who think like Swanson will be judge, jury, and executioner.

For some reason, the word “Pharisee” (or how about just “asshole”) comes to mind….

I don’t believe in God, but I do remember enough of what I was taught during my childhood Sunday School days to know that Swanson is every bit as much a Christian as Michael Savage is the voice of reason and a closet Liberal.

The list of truly, deeply offensive things that Swanson believes and pushes as “Christianity” is as astonishing as it is long. When you believe things like this, how can you credibly claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ?

  • Swanson was deeply offended by the US Women’s World Cup team’s celebration after defeating Japan in the championship game. He was even more incensed that Republican Presidential candidates were congratulating the team: MY GOD, Y’ALL!!! DON’T THEY KNOW THAT MANY OF THE PLAYER ARE LESBIANS???

  • Boycotts Girl Scout cookies because they “promote lesbianism” and “I don’t want my little girl turning into a lesbian.” (What’s truly frightening is that Swanson is raising a child.)

  • Discussed whether the Rose Bowl should include a float where a gay person is stoned to death.

  • Lamented that these days country singer Kacey Musgraves wasn’t lynched for her “promotion of homosexuality” through song. Because nothing offends the baby Jesus more than someone promoting Christian ideals like love, acceptance, and tolerance.

  • Flooding and fires in Colorado were the result of “decadent homosexual activity” and women wearing pants. Every now and again, I run across so breathtaking in the depth and breadth of its arrogance and stupidity that it leaves me blank. I got nothin’.

  • Democrats want to “make sure everybody is committing homosexual acts .” Because as any REAL Christian American Patriot will tell you, Hillary Clinton is a closet lesbian and the Antichrist.

  • Presbyterians embraced Satan by supporting gay rights. NO ONE who believes Jesus Christ taught love, acceptance, tolerance, and understanding could credibly claim to be a REAL Christian, amiright?

There’s more- MUCH more- but I think you get the point, right? It’s not that Swanson- despite his claims to the contrary- can claim to be a Christian. He wouldn’t recognize the Gospel of Jesus Christ if his Lord and avior delivered it personally.

What distresses me is that Republican Presidential candidates are falling all over themselves in an effort to secure Swanson’s endorsement and secure the votes of haters and bigots who consider him to be a man of faith and conviction. These theocrats care nothing for the Constitutional separation of Church and State and would happily see the creation of an authoritarian theocracy along the lines of Iran and Saudi Arabia. That this is nothing if not a recipe for Christian tyranny seems not to be of concern to Swanson and his ilk.

The beautiful thing about America is having the freedom to live and believe as we see fit. The sad thing is the disturbingly large number of hypocrites, zealots, and haters who would force us to live and believe as THEY see fit.

And people wonder why I consider myself to be good without God….
