There are times (like the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Paris) when I find it easy to despair for the future of humanity. It seems we’ve arrived at a place where two competing world view- one beneolvent, kind, and willing to help; the other angry, vindictive, and viewing compassion as weakness- are stuggling for the hearts and minds of the vast majority of sheeple who glide through life thinking that the plot line of The Walking Dead is a legitimate social problem in need of resolution.
Despite my best efforts, sometimes I get caught up in trying to understand people who hate with a burning passion those who don’t look, act, think, love, and/or believe as they do. Hatred, racism, and the willingness to denigrate and oppress those one may deem as “less than” say more about the person exercising an over-developed sense of self-superiority than it ever could about the people he/she belittles and/or wishes to destroy.
I really do try to find the best in people and damn, but it can seem a herculean effort in some cases. If I was a different person, these folks might just cause me enough despair and disillusionment to give up on humanity completely. Thankfully, I’m in a good place, so I can use these sorry excuses for humanity for my own entertainment and edification. It’s not as if they’re doing anything which has any hope of improving the human condition.
