Sometimes it's hard not to be ashamed to be an American and/or a member of the human race

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

-Nelson Mandela

To a degree, fear is understandable. Something terrible happens, and the normal human response is to want to do everything in one’s power to ensure it or something similar isn’t repeated.

That’s an abundance of caution.

When that fear leads to overreaction, hatred, and the marginalization of classes of people who look, live, think, or believe differently from the “norm,” that’s something altogether different and indicative of our collective susceptibility to manipulation, propaganda, and fear-mongering.

That’s xenophobia, racism, and religious bigotry.

Republicans in Congress- and Conservatives nationwide- have decided that playing the fear card is the perfect way to convince the American Sheeple of the righteousness of their cause and consolidate their grip on power. That their self-interested xenophobia has convinced many cowardly Democrats that the way to protect America is by fearing, hating, and excluding The Other should be cause for embarrassment.

The ignorance, reaction, and unbridled hatred, racism, xenophobia, and religious intolerance expressed over the past few days in the wake of the attacks in Paris has left me despairing for the state of humanity. When I look around and listen to the virulent hate speech that seems to be becoming our collective lingua franca, my revulsion becomes difficult to contain. At times like these, we should be standing up in collective defiance to those who would harm us. Instead, we’re cowering in fear and adopting exactly what the Neanderthals responsible for Paris undoubtedly wished to create- fear, anger, mistrust, and the willingness to sacrifice liberty and freedom for security.

It’s time like these when I look around me and find myself ashamed to be a member of the human race, much less an American. We should be better than this. Sadly, it appears we’re not. Not even close.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, those who would sacrifice liberty and freedom for security deserve neither. Nor do those who default to racism, xenophobia, and religious intolerance deserve the benefits of living in a free society…because what they’re clamoring for is anything but free.

At this moment in time, I can say without reservation that I’m ashamed to be a citizen of a country that ignores its strength and heritage and gives in to its darker angels with such ease and facility.

WE DESERVE BETTER.

America Faces Existential Threats, Yet There’s a Good Chance an Idiot Might Become President: And there’s a good chance that idiot will be elected by idiots who find it easier to react to propaganda and manipulation than think critically. Remember George W. Bush? The 2016 Republican Presidential mediocritiescandidates make Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader look like look like a Ph. D. candidate. Welcome to our new idiocracy.

Republican combat vet eviscerates ‘xenophobic’ conservatives: ISIS wins if you block refugees: That the American Sheeple are just stupid and reactionary enough to fall into ISIS/ISIL’s trap and hand the terrorists a convincing victory is proof of just how stupid and manipulable we are.

Rhode Island Republican wants Syrian refugees held in ‘centralized’ camps: ‘Our country is under attack’: Have we learned nothing from our history? Are we to return to the days when we lock up those whose only “crime” is not being White? Or is stupid and racist merely the new patriotism?

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence can’t explain why he rejected Syrian refugee family found to pose no threat: He just knows that advocating hatred and exclusion makes him WAY popular among the Far Right’s base: ignorant, knuckle-dragging Fox News addicts.

Virginia town hall meeting descends into chaos as anti-Muslim bigots scream insults: Better to be thought a fool and a bigot that to display it in front of a bank of TV cameras and remove any lingering doubt.

The Right Responds to Paris With Bible-Thumping, Scientific Illiteracy, Frat Boy Antics: Hey, it beats the Hell out of thinking critically and rationally crafting a reasoned, well-considered response.

I resolutely believe that respect for diversity is a fundamental pillar in the eradication of racism, xenophobia and intolerance. There is no excuse for evading the responsibility of finding the most suitable path towards the elimination of any expression of discrimination against indigenous peoples.

House Dems Back GOP On Bill To Pause Admittance Of Some Refugees: Because as every good, God-fearing, Conservative White patriot knows, ALL Muslims are terrorists- no questions or exceptions.

We created Islamic extremism: Those blaming Islam for ISIS would have supported Osama bin Laden in the ’80s: Thanks, George W. Bush! Not only did Iraq NOT have WMDs, you succeeded in creating exactly what the French government- damn those cheese-eating surrender monkeys- predicted would happen.

The GOP’s Xenophobic Rage Is Out of Control: Why It’s Time to Get Very Nervous: If we can entertain excluding those who we find unacceptable and threatening, how long before they start coming for groups and individuals who refuse to endorse the accepted groupthink?

This is why they hate us: The real American history neither Ted Cruz nor the New York Times will tell you: If Americans knew their history, we’d be in a much better place. Ignore is the friend of those who which to diminish, and ultimately demolish, freedom.

Muslim journalist shuts down Fox pundit for ‘entitled and arrogant’ view of Syrian refugees: The thing about smug arrogance is that it’s very difficult to defend. Who needs facts and evidence when you believe something to be true?

Fox News brings back Obama birther lies: Donald Trump, Dennis Miller and the revolting post-Paris sliming of the president: Because there’s nothing the racists and liars at Roger Ailes’ propaganda empire won’t somehow blame on The Black Guy in the White House ©

It Comes to This - Indiana Town Wants Private Detention Camp for Immigrants as a Means of Boosting Its Economy: Our business is oppression…and business is GOOD.

Ben Carson Compares Some Refugees To Rabid Dogs: And if I (not altogether inaccurately) compared Republicans to rabid dogs, can you imagine the (not unjustified) weeping and gnashing of teeth that would ensue? Then again, when “different” means “less than human,” Ben Carson is about the best you can expect.

A Post-Paris “Clash of Civilizations”? It’s the Islamic State’s Dream and Marco Rubio Agrees: ISIS/ISIL wants to destroy western civilization…which does sound an awful lot like Rubio’s platform.

Trump crosses the Nazi line: Maybe Muslims should wear special ID badges: Mein Kampf was not written as a Conservative policy manual. Trump seems not to have receieved (much less read) the memo.

NRA and Gun Nuts Block Bill to Close Loophole Letting 2,000 People on FBI Terrorist Watchlist Buy Arms: Because NOTHING supercedes the rights of Proudly Closed-minded Gun Control Foes &copy. If they decided it’s their God-given right to carry ANY firepower anytime, anywhere, and for any reason, then so be it. Rational counterarguments need not apply.

Jeb Bush: Let’s Focus On Helping The Christian Syrian Refugees, Rather Than The Muslims: If you call yourself a Christian but refuse to open your arms and your heart to those in dire straits, you’re a hypocrite.

Refugee Paranoia Sweeps U.S. as House of Reps Votes to Freeze Refugee Intake: Live in mortal fear: it’s what America does.

Kansas Official Shows Slides Of Criminals Named Mohammed: Because every violent Islamofascist jihadist is named Mohammed. ANY red-blooded Christian patriot knows that.

Of 745,000 Refugees Admitted Post-9/11, Only Two Were Charged With Terrorism-Related Crimes: Because of those two, we MUST stop all non-Christian immigration…and send those who we’ve already admitted (and in some cases granted citizenship) back to the hellhole they call home.

Facebook outraged after prominent GOPer posts picture of Paris corpses to blame ‘diversity’ for terrorism: Diversity is what makes this country what it is. So is hatred, racism, and xenophobia.

CNN Anchors Press French Muslim to Accept ‘Responsibility’ for ISIS Attacks in Paris: “You’re Muslim, so shouldn’t you be admitting responsibility…even though you were never remotely involved?”

‘Do whatever you want, but keep me safe’: Some French willing to exchange freedoms for safety: Those who would sacrifice liberty and freedom for security deserve neither liberty nor freedom. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
