The councilor is absolutely correct;Jesus is the only Reason for the season. There is no such thing as a mythological “holiday season.” There is only the Advent and Christmas season. Hanukkah is not a holiday and you can’t find it in the Jewish version of the Old Testament. If the Jews want to win friends and influence people, then they should cease trying to step on the Christian Christmas. As a Greek Orthodox Christian , I find Hanukkah to be very offfensive. If the Jews want to make a big deal about a Jewish holiday, then they can emphasize Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur or even Purim, but stay away from Christmas.
There are few things I find more thoroughly entertaining than a good, God-fearing, ‘Murrican patriot who takes it upon himself to edumicate those less enlightened on what they are and are not entitled to believe. After a December, 2014 menorah lighting ceremony in Springfield, MA, in which a city councillor said “Jesus is the reason for the season,” a Good Christian decided to ensure the record was set straight.
That whole “freedom of religion?” Yeah, turns out it’s applicable only to Christians.
Evidently blissfully ignorant of the fact that not everyone believes (or should believe) in the same things, our intrepid commenter took the initiative to ensure no one was confused about “the reason for the season.” The idea that someone might actually not see their way clear to sharing these beliefs chapter and verse seems almost more than our pointy-headed little friend might be able to handle.
Anyone care to tell him that the “reason for the season,” such as it is, is the birthday (which isn’t even December 25th) of the son of a Jewish carpenter? Or that he doesn’t get final say over who owns Christmas, much less how it’s celebrated?
