It would be difficult to underestimate the sheer lack of humanity and compassion evident in someone so addled by homophobia, hyper-religiosity, and self-righteous arrogance that they’d seriouly believe this bill to be a step forward. Then again, we’re talking about that noted paragon of (not so) Christ-like love and tolerance, Oklahoma state representative Sally Kerns (R-12th century), who’s to Christian love and charity what Torquemada was to free expression.
Kerns’ bill would prevent LGBT minors seeking treatment for depression from being counseled from anyone at school who might affirm them as more than just gay. This bill is actually one of a stable of anti-gay bills Kerns is hoping to see passed into law…because Lord knows the biggest threat facing good, God-fearing Oklahomans is that posed by LGBT teenagers.
The stipulations in Kerns’ bill would end when a student turns 18, but since Oklahoma has made it legal for student groups on college campuses to openly discriminate against those who identify as LGBT, Oklahoma could and should accurately be called The State That Hates ©.
As the quote above indicates, Kerns would deny access LGBT teens to counseling that might make what can be a hellish high school experience under the best of circumstances just that much worse. To call Kerns inhuman would be an insult to those devoid of humanity.
[O]klahoma legislators are trying to pass an expressively cruel bill that would bar depressed LGBT youngsters from seeking gay-affirming counseling at school, Slate reports.
The state House bill, proposed by Republican Sally Kern, is part of a slew of anti-gay legislation she wants to pass, which would sanction discredited gay “conversion” therapy and prevent HIV-positive people from getting married.
As Slate points out, LGBT kids raised in homophobic households have higher rates of depression, anxiety and suicide, and public school counselors who can connect them with the right LGBT-friendly groups and gay-affirming therapists provide a critical lifeline.
The bill states that no public school “counselor, therapist, social worker, administrator, teacher or other individual” will be allowed to refer anyone under 18 to any person or organization if the referral “pertain[s] to human sexuality.”
It astonishes me that Kerns is so thoroughly obsessed with what others do behind closed doors. When you consider all of the other pressing issues undoubtedly facing government in the Sooner State, things legitimately in need of attention and that impact Oklahomans on a daily basis, Kerns has chosen to focus her considerable ire and energies on homosexuality, something that has no impact whatsoever on her day-to-day life?
Kerns would also sanction and encourage “gay conversion” therapy, long since thoroughly discredited and denounced, even by those who used to participate in it and have since stopped and issued an apology for the harm they’ve acknowledged causing.
As if she hadn’t already done enough to demonstrate that she’d have the LGBT community exterminated if only she could figure out how to get a bill to the Governor’s desk, Kerns would also bar HIV-positive people from marrying. It’s difficult to understand the depth and degree of self-righteous hatred that consumes a sorry excuse for humanity like Kerns. She’s demonstrated herself to be a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ in the same way Timothy McVeigh was all about nonviolent conflict resolution.
In many ways, Kerns and her virulent hyper-Christian homophobia is more of a reflection on those who’ve voted for her than anything else. This means that, not only is Sally Kerns perhaps the single most objectionable walking meat sack on the face of the planet, there are those who wholeheartedly support her.
I can’t help but wonder…have any of these folks actually bothered to crack a Bible lately?
