If you care about America, you'd hit your knees and pray for a Trump-free America

Donald Trump fans are a special breed of American voter. To hear them tell it, they’re a disenfranchised silent majority who simply want to see America restored to its past glory. To hear everyone else tell it, they’re a violent mob of tempestuous racists.

It would be easy to look at Donald Trump’s current status as the GOP’s frontrunner heading into primary season and despair for the future of our new idiocracy the republic. A blowhard, gas bag, racist, and xenophobe whose appeal lies in speaking to the baser instincts and darker angels of stupid low-information voters, Trump seems unable to articulate a positive vision…though he’s very good at telling us what’s wrong- with America and with his opponents.

That Trump is a truly execrable walking meat sack and a miserable excuse for a human being is at this point almost beyond arguing. If there is a Hell, The Donald has a reserved parking space next to the front gate.

I could go on at length (and in the past I have) about Trump and his supreme lack of qualifications and fitness to sit behind the big desk in the Oval Office. He shouldn’t be allowed to manage a Dairy Queen, much less the affairs of the most powerful country in the world. At this point, there’s nothing more I can add to the Sturm und Drang. If you insist on supporting a Republican candidate who, if you had to describe him one word, that word would be “evil,” it would be difficult not to argue that you’re beyond redemption. Then again, if you’re a rabid Trump supporter, you’re very likely not reading this…and even if you were, you’d have be considered beyond convincing that Trump is the problem, not a solution.

Republican fear-mongering, which is the source of Trump’s brand, is taking America to a very dark and distressing place. The question, at least for, becomes how much I’m willing to continue swimming in these polluted waters.

With that in mind, I find myself in a position where I’m quite frankly sick to death of everything Trump-related. There’s nothing more I can (or choose to) add to what’s already been said about such an egomaniacal demagogue. From today on, there will be no mention (at least insofar as is possible) of Donald Trump, his followers, or those who support his dystopian vision for an America no one who loves freedom could hope to recognize. In the same way I’ve sworn off Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, and several other Far Right-wing trolls, this ends here and now. There are plenty of other voices willing to opine at considerable length about The Donald; I no longer wish to be a member of that club.

I’m also going to try to expand that umbrella to cover the rest of the occupants of the GOP clown car whose presidential campaigns are fueled by hatred, divisiveness, willful misinformation, lack of integrity, and religious intolerance. Enough is enough.

I reserve the right to deviate from this pledge as I deem necessary, and I’m not about to refrain from commentary on Conservative demagogues in the broader sense. I’m done wasting time, energy, brain cells, and column inches on those for whom the definition of “principled leadership” includes fear-mongering, prevarication, and hatred of The Other.

We should be better than that.

I realize there’s an ever-expanding groundswell of anger extant in our political discourse these days. I may not be able to fix that, but I can certainly do my part by not contributing to it. Politics may be my bailiwick, and I see no reason why that should change. That said, I refuse to waste my beautiful mind (apologies to Barbara Bush for the shameless theft of her catch phrase) on demagogues steeped in evil, self-interest, dishonesty, and the demonization of anyone not White, Conservative, and Christian.

I have so many other, more productive things on my mind these days. I think I can keep myself occupied, and so I’ll leave the silliness to others. Have fun with it; I’m out.
