Bernie puts a bird on it

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is using the image of a bird that flew on to a lectern where he was speaking in Portland to promote his vision of America. And it couldn’t be more different than the one Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump offers. Unlike Trump, who plays to the worst fears and instincts of Americans, the Democratic presidential candidate is using the bird to emphasize that he believes in an America where all of us support each other. Sanders used the unusual moment at his rally to call for peace, saying that the small bird was really a dove sending a message that there should be no more war. But equally remarkable was his joy when the bird landed — a reminder that our politics can be filled with joy, not fear.

I tried to go to Sen. Sanders’ rally at Moda Center on Friday, but I didn’t want to have to wait in a ridiculously long line and then for another three hours for the candidate to arrive. There’s no one I’d wait that long to see. Turns out I missed something pretty special.

What I missed was what turned out to be on one the seminal moments of Sen. Sander’s campaign. It was just a bird that landed on his podium as he spoke, but it was Sen. Sander’s reaction that was priceless- genuine awe and humility. The bird’s arrival may or may not have been apropos of anything, but it was a light-hearted and genuine moment in an election cycle that’s becoming infamous for a pronounced lack of them.

Given that Donald Trump has had his own bird encounter…one that didn’t turn out so well…it just might be that Mother Nature has issued her own endorsement of Sen. Sanders.

If you’ll forgive the cheesy Portlandia reference, it seems fitting that Sen. Sanders put a bird on it here in Portland.
