Bernie vs. Hillary: Do we stand on principle or torpedo our own boat?

Bernie Sanders is the only Democrat not linked to an FBI investigation. If this doesn’t mean anything to you, then you’re too terrified of Trump’s rallies to realize that Clinton could get indicted. Also, if you can’t fathom the possibility of Donald Trump winning, then keep in mind that most Americans don’t trust or like Hillary Clinton. A general election isn’t a popularity contest among Democrats. In 10 out of 10 national polls regarding favorability, Hillary Clinton has negative favorability ratings nationally in all 10. Be very careful what you wish for, because most Americans have an unfavorable view of Clinton and Bernie Sanders already beats Trump by a wider margin. I’m only voting for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and I explain why in this YouTube segment. Most importantly, Democrats should remember that 33% of Bernie Sanders voters will refuse to vote for Clinton in November, if she becomes nominee.

After Sec. Clinton’s string of triumphs over the past couple weeks, it’s beginning to appear as if her time may well have come and that any hope for Sen. Bernie Sanders to be the Democratic nominee has, if not vanished, then something close to it. I’m disappointed because my candidate- whom I still believe to be infinitely superior to Sec. Clinton- looks increasingly unlikely to prevail. The race isn’t over yet, to be certain, but if I were a betting man….

At some point, everyone supporting the unsuccessful candidate needs to determine how to move forward. What do they do with their vote? How do they deal with their disappointment? Do they swallow their pride and focus on the greater good? Or do they hold onto their anger and refuse to vote for Sec. Clinton? What’s more important- clinging to one’s principles or ensuring that Republicans don’t take the White House in November? That’s not a rhetorical question…but it seems as if it should be.

As much as I haven’t been willing to support Sec. Clinton, I’m even less willing to take the risk of seeing a Republican with their hand on the Bible as they take the oath of office next January. To those 33% of Sanders voters who refuse to for Sec. Clinton, I’d ask only one question: Are you REALLY willing to take a chance that Donald Trump or Sen. Ted Cruz might be the one putting their hand on that Bible at on Inauguration Day? Are you really such inflexibly committed True Believers that you’d stick to your principles at the expense of seeing America turned over to the Far Right?

I’m not ready to jump ship yet; I still believe there’s a chance that Sen. Sanders will prevail. What I do know is that we need to keep our eyes on the prize and not let wounded pride result in Republicans winning the White House.

For now, I’m still feeling the Bern. Sen. Sanders is supposed to appear at Moda Center here in Portland tomorrow, just a couple miles from home. I may decide to go, because until or unless he concedes, there’s still hope and the fight continues.
