Ignoring a person's human rights doesn't mean those rights cease to exist

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) is doing damage control after being criticized for a law that discriminates against the LGBT community. In a press release Tuesday, McCrory announced he’d signed an executive order clarifying the language of HB2, a bill he signed in March that blocked cities and counties from passing anti-discrimination policies….”After listening to people’s feedback for the past several weeks on this issue, I have come to the conclusion that there is a great deal of misinformation, misinterpretation, confusion, a lot of passion and frankly, selective outrage and hypocrisy, especially against the great state of North Carolina,” McCrory said before outlining his executive order.

I never cease to be amazed at the propensity of Conservatives to believe that they and only they have the right to set the tone and tenor of a debate, and that no one who disagrees with them has any right or reason to disagree.

Gov. McCrory very likely concludedthere is a great deal of misinformation, misinterpretation, confusion, a lot of passion and frankly, selective outrage and hypocrisy, especially against the great state of North Carolina” because it’s easy to discount the validity of dissenting opinions. Believing that good, God-fearing, patriotic Christians like himself are FAR better equipped to deal with moral quandaries than godless Liberals means never having to concern yourself with God being on your side- because he’ ALWAYS on your side.

Whether Gov. McCrory admits to reality or not, the facts of the matter are no less real. It’s not about misinformation, misinterpretation, or selective outrage; it’s about the lies and disinformation being peddled by Gov. McCrory and North Carolina Republicans. It’s about dishonesty, homophobia, and religious fervor used as camouflage for rampant hatred and bigotry. It’s about a solution in search of a problem- Conservative culture warriors are terribly concerned about the nonexistent problem of pedophiles in public restrooms even as they’ve declined to address the VERY real problem of pedophile priests in the Catholic Church.

It should be about respect and the willingness to treat others as you’d hoped to be treated. No one should have the right to consign a minority class of people to the status of second-class citizens legally defined as “less than.” This is far more about North Carolina Republicans being afraid of the “T” in “LGBT” than it is about protecting the sanctity of restrooms in the Tarheel State.

It’s about them being assholes and discriminating against a minority class whose struggles they can’t be bothered to understand…because they view them as something less than human and unworthy of the rights and protections which accrue to “normal” people. McCrory’s feeble protestations aside, North Carolina has bestowed upon itself a well-deserved reputation as a state that hates. Republicans could recognize and admit their error and do something to reverse their poor decision…but it appears from McCrory’s words that they’re fully prepared to double down on their hatred and bigotry.

Stay classy, eh?
