Another (Not So) Great Moment in Silliness and Overreaction

SALISBURY — High school students will be allowed to carry mace in the 2016-2017 school year after the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education agreed to remove prohibitive language and amend its policy…. Board member Chuck Hughes was in favor of the sprays on campuses, saying that in his mind, they were purely defensive. He also referenced HB2, saying that the sprays might be useful…. “Depending on how the courts rule on the bathroom issues, it may be a pretty valuable tool to have on the female students if they go to the bathroom, not knowing who may come in,” he said.

Reading this story can only be described as a “WTF???” moment if ever there was one. The idea that high school students should be allowed to bring mace or pepper spray to school with them- because they might be attacked in a restroom by a sexual predator- is about as ludicrous as it gets.

How long until someone decides it would be a GREAT idea to allow students to carry firearms? If you think they’ll need mace or pepper spray to protect themselves from perverted men in dresses, how long before you think allowing students to carry firearms would be a GREAT idea?

Is no one asking what sort of message the new policy is sending to students? Or are they OK with the idea that they’re teaching kids that transgendered individuals are nasty, icky predators- men in dresses who want nothing more than to satisfy their sick, unhealthy urges by attacking them in public restrooms? That they’re teaching children to fear a nonexistent threat and to watch their backs seems to matter not at all to those charged with their education. IT COULD HAPPEN!!

With North Carolina bravely leading the charge (against a threat which exists only in their fever dreams), it stands to reason that good, God-fearing, Bible-believing, missionary-position-loving, heterosexual Conservative White Christians would want to allow for some form of self-defense. It’s just too bad that adults are choosing to react to an imaginary threat in such a ridiculously immature manner.
