Conservatives howled in rage after the Chicago Tribune used an American flag image to promote a Memorial Day sale on its newspapers. The ad, which was posted on the newspaper’s Facebook page, offered a 50 percent discount to new subscribers in honor of Memorial Day — but the way the flag was shown angered many conservative readers. They complained the flag had been shown “backwards,” because the blue field studded with white stars was displayed on the viewer’s right, which is prohibited by the Federal Flag Code…. “It’s no wonder Chicago is in ruins,” wrote Regina B. Mondiale. “Their Tribune can’t even display the American Flag RIGHT.”…. “Do not give the anti-American anti-Christian Chicago Tribune one red cent!” demanded Carl Segvich…. “Buy this lefty crap! You’re lucky I even read it on here,” wrote Rick Duncan.
It’s comforting to know that there are brave souls in America- Right-wing zealots living in their parent’s basement, most likely- willing to put themselves on the line to protect what’s really important to our collective well-being- symbolism. Yes, it’s true; when godless Liberals abuse the things which makes this country great- in this case, the graphic representation of the American flag- America moves one step closer to becoming Soviet Russia…Comrade.
There are SO many issues and questions worthy of the energy and attention of these brave patriots- health care, education, foreign policy, immigration, etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseam- so many ways in which their considered input could have a positive impact. They could put their love of country to use by volunteering their time to help those in need. They could help foster a greater understanding of what makes this country great. They could do that and so much more…but it would require actually DOING something constructive. No, ‘tis far easier to piss and moan about symbolism from the safety of their keyboard…and to vent their considerable righteous butthurt at those they view as enemies of all that’s Good, Right, and Holy.
I understand love of country and devotion to the things which symbolize it. That said, a ridiculous amount of Conservative butthurt is being expended on…wait for it…the graphic representation of a flag in a Chicago Tribune ad.
Yes, there’s a federal law that applies in this case, but are we REALLY to consider using our judicial system to punish those whose only real crime was inadvertently offending the tender sensibilities of REAL ‘Mericans? I can’t help but wonder if the Righteous keyboard warriors, brave defenders of the Realm all, bothered to consider that this “controversy” might be the result of an honest mistake. Of course, when your existence is validated by finding cause to vent your considerable righteous outrage against leftists and other enemies of the state, there’s no such thing as an honest mistake. It’s convincing evidence of an evil, insidious Liberal plot to destroy America…and it starts with a misprinted America flag in a newspaper’s Memorial Day Sale ad.
