Texas Gov. Greg Abbott finally found something even dumber to say than, “Maybe there’s something to all this Jade Helm 15 conspiracy talk.”…. Abbott waded into the political debate over which public bathrooms transgender people should be legally permitted to use with a tweet Tuesday morning comparing the issue to the 1969 moon landing. Twitter users quickly and mercilessly mocked the Republican governor and former state attorney general.
It would be easy to ridicule Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for one of the most ridiculous, gratuitously insulting, brain-dead tweets one could ever hope to come across. Fortunately, I don’t have to do the heavy lifting…because Twitter has already done the heavy lifting and roasted Abbott, and far more elegantly and exquisitely than I could ever hope to.
What I find so astonishing is that Abbott seems to recognize nothing at all inappropriate and disrespectful with taking such a cheap shot at the President. Anyone with half a brain could look at his tweet and immediately recognize it for the gratuitous, unfounded insult it is. Then again, the American Taliban is chock full of rabidly Conservative Christians who, like Abbott, believe it their solemn duty to lob all manner of unfounded and scurrilous accusations at The Black Guy in the White House ©. They see no reason to respect someone they despise viscerally, utterly, and without reason. Never mind that Barack Obama is the President of the United States; to Abbott and his fellow Brave Defenders of the Faith ©, The Black Guy in the White House © isn’t THEIR President. He’s the Devil Incarnate, the corporeal embodiment of Evil and Iniquity…and therefore unworthy of anything even faintly redolent of respect.
Of course, respect- or the lack thereof- is a two-way street, and Abbott seems to lack the self-awareness and mental agility to recognize how truly ridiculous and classless his juvenile insult is. Yes, politics can be and very often is an exceedingly contentious and cantankerous undertaking; that’s hardly breaking news. There’s no need for it to be as mean-spirited and personal as Abbott has chosen to make it. It’s possible to disagree with a President’s policies and aspirations while also respecting their humanity and dignity. Abbott- as with so many rabid Conservatives- believes his unquestioned moral/ideological/theological superiority confers upon him no obligation to treat political adversaries- especially The Black Guy in the White House © with even the barest minimum of respect and dignity.
Stay classy, Governor.
