Gun manufacturers are above the law: It would be funny if it wasn't true

Amy Schumer, a longtime advocate of gun control, has sometimes turned to comedy to help voice her disgust with political inaction on the topic. The Senate’s inability to pass gun control measures this week inspired her to release a previously axed “Inside Amy Schumer” sketch highlighting the helplessness of shooting victims…. “I am sickened by the cowardice of these people who are supposed to lead us,” Schumer told Politico. “Their dedication seems to be only to dollar signs for their own pockets. In November, we will remember who stood with the gun lobby, rather than their constituents, as we mourned for Orlando.”

Sometimes it takes someone using parody to highlight the absurdity of something for us to realize just how truly absurd and ridiculous it is. For example, you can sue McDonald’s for selling you coffee hot enough to cause severe burns when you spill it in your lap…but you can’t sue a gun manufacturer for selling a weapon used in a mass shooting. You can sue an automobile manufacturer for selling you a car with a defective airbag…but you can’t sue the maker of a gun used to mow down innocent schoolchildren. You can sue anyone for pretty much anything…but you can’t sue a gun manufacturer for selling a gun employed for its one and only purpose- the efficient and ruthless slaughter of as many people as possible in as short a time frame as possible.

The problem is that Congress has been in the employ of the National Rifle Association (NRA) for so long that all Wayne LaPierre has to do is sneeze and virtually every member of the Congressional Republican Caucus will drop trou, bend over, and grab their ankles. It’s the worst sort of corruption writ large, and it means the NRA and the gun lobby have purchased the best, most compliant government blood money can buy.

The most frustrating aspect of this sorry saga is that it need not be this way. Congress works for US, the PEOPLE…and we should be able to expect better, more responsible representation. We should be able to, but we don’t. We continue electing moral midgets with ethical standards lower than a snake’s belly and who are far more committed to those who filling their campaign coffers than innocent Americans victims of gun violence. Because of this, Proudly Closed-minded Gun Control Foes ©- or, more colloquially, “monsters”- demand (and receive assurances) that their “gun rights” will be elevated any and all other considerations…including the right not to be killed by a gun.

If only I could be reincarnated as an AR-15….
