Mama, don't let your babies grow up to the atheists- they might learn to think for themselves

(Thanks to Krista for the inspiration for this one….)

Atheism has been around for thousands of years, and responsible for many philosophical and scientific developments. Like any movement, it has had its fair share of evil characters. As atheism has no moral precepts, outside of natural morality and ethics, it is hard to say how their atheism influenced their behavior or the particular political and similar movements they chose to follow. It seems that no matter what philosophy or religion people profess, people will always do wrong, whether or not in the name of their faith.

It’s no secret that many Christians believe those of us who consider ourselves good without God to be speeding on the Expressway to Hell in a Ferrari with no brakes. Do not pass “GO!”…do not collect $200…go directly to Hell. Because I’m a “godless atheist,” I’m presumed to be all manner of nasty, horrible, evil, very bad things- a pedophile, a communist, an America-hater who sympathies lean toward embracing radical Islamofascist terrorism. I kick the walkers out from senior citizens, kick dogs, and butt into lines at coffee shops…and I LIKE it.

Truth be told, I may well be a horrible excuse for humanity, but not for any of those reasons. If you believe that “freedom OF religion doesn’t mean freedom FROM religion,” you’re probably thinking I should be packing my bags so I can catch the next flight to Pyongyang, where a socialist Paradise awaits me with all its attendant bounty and abundance.

The good news, Comrade, is that it turns out I’m in pretty good company when it comes to not believing in God. Pol Pot? Jeffrey Dahmer? Kim Jong Il? Clearly, I’m going to have to step up my game…in ways that doesn’t involve genocide, of course.

‘Course, it’s not as if those claiming the imprimatur of God Almighty are uniformly covering themselves in glory….
