Texas Republicans: Keeping Texans scared and stupid since...well, forever

At the Republican Party of Texas convention, Gov. Greg Abbott told thousands of delegates that the Islamic State group, which has ravaged parts of the Middle East, was at work along the Texas-Mexico border…. “Our country better wake up. We’re facing an existential threat,” he said. “ISIS is running through the border made porous by Barack Obama’s policies.”…. ISIS has seized vast territory in Iraq and Syria wielding heavy weapons of war. It terrorizes civilians and broadcasts footage of sadistic executions. Does it also operate over the 1,254-mile Texas-Mexico border?

Republicans in Texas, if they chose to, could make a serious difference for the better. They have the resources and the votes to improve the state’s healthcare, education, infrastructure, and so many other things. They could…but they’ve chosen instead to follow their usual Panem et circenses strategy- “bread and circuses”- intended to distract easily manipulable Texas voters and keep them scared and stupid. Gov. Abbott isn’t a stupid man, but neither is he willing to do the heavy lifting required of the job he was hired to do. Instead of trying to lead Texas to a brighter, more prosperous and harmonious future, he’s prattling endlessly about how The Black Guy in the White House © is placing Texans at risk by allowing ISIS to queue up at our southern border. That this is pure, unadulterated crap is something Gov. Abbott is well aware of, but when you rode into office on the shoulders of the Lowest Common Denominator ©, you dance with who brung ya, knowhutimean? Blaming The Black Guy in the White House © for virtually every problem you refuse to address may ensure your continued employment as Governor, but it does nothing to make Texas a better place.

Then again, I suspect Gov. Abbott is far less concerned with being known for prescient, insightful leadership than with pandering to Texas’ Lowest Common Denominator © in order to ensure his continued employment. Texas voters, some of the nation’s least informed (no mean feat that), are notoriously easy to distract with shiny objects like ISIS or BENGHAZI!!! or Jade Helm or evil transgenders peeing or…well, you get the idea.

The fact is that radical Islamofascist ISIS terrorists are not “running through the border made porous by Barack Obama’s policies.” Far from it. Of course, Gov. Abbott has never been one for allowing an inconvenient thing like the truth to get in the way of a good smear of The Black Guy in the White House ©.

It’s been said- often by me- that Americans get exactly the quality of leadership they deserve. It’s just sad that Texans’ standards are so abysmally low. Then again, what else could you expect from an electorate who’d vote for a ham sandwich if it had an “R” behind its name? That’s essentially what they did by electing and re-electing Rick Perry and before him George W. Bush. Evidently, high standards are for losers and Liberals.
