Christians (and Republicans) aren't perfect...just forgiven

Robertson said that he would be voting for Donald Trump in November only because he doesn’t like Hillary Clinton and hopes that Trump will be better. Ideally, Robertson said, “we convert Mr. Trump” to Christianity so that all of his past scandals and indiscretions that will be brought up during the campaign will be rendered moot because he has been born again…. “If he but be born again, he could then tell them, ‘That’s the old me, I’ve been born again, this is the new Donald Trump,’” Robertson said, envisioning a cabinet meeting where he would be introduced to the world as President Trump’s spiritual advisor…. “Now, that would send a shock wave through America,” he said. “The left-wingers would be jumping out of buildings.”

The idea that becoming a Christian is the theological equivalent of a “get out of jail free” card is as old as the human penchant for getting away with having one’s hand in the cookie jar. We Americans HATE accountability; we hate being held to be responsible for our actions. After all, “personal responsibility,” at least so far as Republicans are concerned, is something to be expected- nay, demanded- of others. You can’t look at Donald Trump and credibly claim to believe that the GOP is the party of personal responsibility.

Despite what über-Christian spiritual warrior Phil Robertson might conveniently believe, becoming a Christian doesn’t absolve a person Republican of prior sins, scandals, ripoffs, and #$%&ups. Perhaps in the eyes of the Republican God I don’t believe in, being “born again” washes away sins and restores the piety of a good, God-fearing, patriotic Conservative stalwart…but here in the temporal world, there’s no cosmic “get out of jail free” card. You are, and should be, responsible for past wrongs, crimes, and improper behavior- especially ones resulting in damages done to others. What happens in the afterlife is of no concern to me, but what Donald Trump has done in this life is something he simply shouldn’t get a free pass for Whether or not he may have accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior is apropos of nothing when it comes to personal accountability…nor should it be.

As for the idea that “left-wingers would be jumping out of buildings,” if Jesus can wipe Donald Trump’s moral slate clean, I think He can grant us the right to fly, don’tchathink??
