If your Christianity allows you to refer to women as "sluts," YERDOONITRONG!!!

My second response after reading (and re-reading) this tweet- my first was to spew coffee over the keyboard of my laptop- was to wonder how it is that someone like Jennifer Mayers can even call herself a “Christian.”

Of course, if you’re definition of “Christian” is “someone who freely grants themselves the right to ridicule others for not meeting their narrow, intolerant standards,” then, sure, I suppose Ms. Mayers is the very definition of Christian compassion.

Mayers’ Twitter profile (Louisiana. Wife, mother, Christian. I love the beach. With #God all things are possible. I am a believer in the positivity of the Lord GUATEMALAN. #Trump2016) is a thing of, if not beauty, then something closely approximating it. Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder…and it seems Ms. Mayers wouldn’t recognize the teachings of her Lord and Savior if Jesus His Own Self handed her an instruction manual (a “Bible”).

Whether or not Mayers cares to recognize this or not, slut shaming is not a Christian value. Calling yourself a Christian is not an excuse for belittling others in the name of your clearly superior religious/moral/ideological framework.

If you like your Christianity haughty, judgmental, and willing to gratuitously insult those who fall short of your standard of conduct, then you should be following Ms. Mayers. Her righteous, self-satisfied piety and self-superiority make her something close to the reincarnation of the late (not so very) great, über- Christian Anita Bryant.

Then again, on some level, one really has to admire who can toss of a cheap insult by using a ham sandwich as a metaphor for a vagina. Points for creativity there, eh?

I don’t dispute Ms. Mayers’ right to spread her petty, faux-Christian brand of hatred and self-superiority…but if she’s going to blithely toss around “slut” to describe Taylor Swift, I wonder what sort of adjectives might be used to describe her? I’ll leave that to the imagination of my gentle readers, but I’m always astonished at those who lack the self-awareness to recognize that disrespect, condemnation, and cheap, gratuitous insults can be a two-way street.

Lest you succumb to the urge to cut Ms. Mayers some slack, get a load of how she responded to questions posed to her via Twitter:

can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

Well I’m 44. I live in baton rouge obviously. Married 19 years with 3 daughters. My youngest turned 12 a month ago. I stay at home. My husband supports us all.

Go to Monday evening bible study in addition to Sunday

why did you decide to get a Twitter account?

I needed an outlet. I made it well over a year ago but I was never really vocal until my testimony started to catch on.

And my husband said that I could have one

Wait..HER HUSBAND said she could have a Twitter account? Does Ms. Mayers not think and make decisions for herself and/or BY herself? Is she her husband’s property? Is she incapable of independent thought?

what do you mean by “testimony”?

Testifying my beliefs in God and having such an intense reaction. Whether good or bad it’s inspiring discussion

what church do you belong to?

Broadmoor Methodist

when you tweet are you trying to be funny?

Not always. I think people take what I say too literally

Or perhaps the way I word things. I’m not sure

I think it’s probably because your tone is so deadpan. do you agree?

Probably but that’s just how I am

how did you think to compare a vagina to a ham sandwich?

Well it was meant as a visual aid. That’s what I mean by people taking it too literally. As if I have my daughters stand over me so I can examine them. It’s ridiculous.

It merely represents promiscuity in comparison to the puritan ways of Jesus the way he intends it to be.

I don’t know about you, but I will NEVER, EVER be able to look at a ham sandwich in the same way again. EVER.

I personally have trouble figuring out your tone because some of your tweets are so funny, and some are just racist.

I don’t think I’m racist. I speak truth. If it happens to coincide with a particular race then so be it.

what about when you call black peoples “apes?” or [say] black people are lazy that seems like the definition of racism to me

It’s true

A fact is a fact

“A fact is a fact?” Really? When last I checked, “facts” were things supported by “data” and “evidence,” not personal prejudice and ignorance. I don’t think “fact” means what Mayers thinks it means.

Referring to African-Americans as “apes” and/or calling them lazy isn’t racism? Or is it merely being an arrogant, self-superior asshole? Mayers’ views of African-Americans is the textbook definition of racism, and she’d be (accurately) considered a racist.

what do you hope to achieve with your Twitter?

To enlighten people

Make them spiritual

Return America to the way it was

Read that last answer and sit with it for a moment. “To enlighten people.” “Make them spiritual.” “Return America to the way it was.”

How a truly, deeply arrogant and ignorant person could hope to enlighten anyone defies rational understanding. The intellectually stunted aren’t really prime candidates for educating anyone…unless it’s in their ignorance and prejudice, which is all they really understand.

I would never question Ms. Mayers’ right to hold what beliefs she will. It’s a free country, and she can do as she chooses. What she doesn’t have a right to is the expectation of being given a free pass and not be called out for what others may see as bigotry, hypocrisy, or the bastardization of a perfectly good religion.
