Today's GOP: Ignorant, reactionary, irrational...and evidently built to stay that way

After Donald Trump called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” New Hampshire state Rep. Al Baldasaro (R), the co-chair of Trump’s state veterans coalition, did his best to defend the candidate’s proposal. “What he’s saying is no different than the situation during World War II,” Baldasaro said, “when we put the Japanese in camps.” The New Hampshire Republican intended this as a defense. [Baldasaro], who advises Donald Trump on veterans’ issues called Tuesday for Hillary Clinton to be “put in the firing line and shot for treason” for her handling of the Benghazi terror attack. Appearing on WRKO radio from the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, state Representative Al Baldasaro, a Londonderry Republican, called the presumptive Democratic nominee “a piece of garbage.”

I made a promise to myself before the Republican National Convention began. Seeing no reason why I should allow the nonsense and verbal vomit certain to emerge from the cesspool in Cleveland, I see no reason why I should bother my beautiful mind (apologies to Barabara Bush) with such ugliness.

If it could be anticipated that intelligent, rational people would be intelligently and rationally discussing policy proposals and pressing issues, I might have been curious enough to tune in. When an entire day is devoted to various chants demanding that Hillary Clinton be locked up (Due process? Democrats don’t deserve due process!! That’s only for REAL Americans….), I’m outta there. I just thinking about that makes my head hurt. It seems this is the week when Republicans prove to America (repeatedly, as it turns out) that the GOP is no longer a civilized party, but rather a collection of ignorant, fact-free, hateful savages.

The hatred, the ignorance, the stupidity, the jingoism, the conspiracy theories, the misogyny…THIS is the party that believes itself to be the rightful (and ONLY) heir to power? I can handle the fact that Republicans clearly disagree with me on most everything under the sun…but has anyone even articulated a reasoned, rational, coherent argument…about anything? Judging from the reports I’ve been hearing and what I’ve been reading, stupid and irrational seem to be the dominant themes in Cleveland this week.

Intellectually deficient people believing stupid things for phenomenally ignorant reasons…these are the people who believe they are the rightful owners and stewards of the American Dream?

Seldom has there been a pronounced and grievous collective explosion of immaturity and self-absorbed, ill-informed, willful ignorance of the sort capable of generating the stench wafting over America from the direction of Cleveland. If you doubt that the new idiocracy is upon us, turn on your television. If what you see doesn’t make you want to vomit, you haven’t been paying attention.
