Apparently being aggressively stupid isn't a liability as long as you have HUGE breasts. It seems the Anna Nicole Show is something of a ratings hit.
One critic likened it to a trip to the vomitorium while another said it was a cruel joke and a freak show. But E! Entertainment Television thinks it has a hit on its hands....
E! Entertainment Tuesday said the debut of its "reality" show starring former Playboy Playmate and Texas oil tycoon widow Anna Nicole Smith ranked as its highest-rated program premiere ever and was also the top debut for a reality show on basic cable.
A spokeswoman said the Sunday debut of the half-hour show, which chronicles the outlandish life of the now plus-sized Smith, 34, her beloved dog Sugar Pie and her entourage, logged a 4.1 rating, which translates to over 4 million viewers.
I just wonder what it is about Smith that even remotely qualifies as "reality"? This is a woman who can barely articulate thoughts, much speak in complete sentences. If she didn't have the largest breasts on Planet Reebok, she'd be a hostess at a Hooter's somewhere in West Texas. And what is it about "reality shows" that impresses viewers as being anything close to reality?
I believe it was Marshall McLuhan who described television as a "vast wasteland". In this case, "vast" would be a severe understatement.
