Day 8 on the Campaign Trail

Bush, Clinton in campaign blitz

Voters in poll claim parties lack vision

Star Tribune poll: Mondale, Coleman in statistical tie

Poll puts Perry in double-digit lead

Two days until Election Day....

The reality is beginning to set in; I likely won't be having to worry moving to the Guv'nurs mansion in Austin. In the last polls, the polltakers must have forgotten to include me in their questions, because if my campaign were Catholic it would be getting last rites about now.

I've decided that this is OK, though, It's a cold, rainy, crummy day outside, and I'd rather curl up on the couch and watch football anyway. So, no fiery campaign rallies, no promises to invade Lousiana or Oklahoma, no promises of gunracks in every truck- just me and the Mrs. curled up on the couch watching our beloved Texans dismantle the Bungles.

I am proud that I've been able to conduct my campaign on a positive note. The same couldn't be said for many other Texas candidates. Of course, not having any money or staff did limit my ability to do any advertising at all- positive or negative.

Money, mud and malice may be the ultimate winners of the 2002 Texas campaign season.

Record amounts of money are bankrolling buckets of malicious advertising, leaving Texans wondering whether they can bear to trudge through the muck Tuesday to vote.

Campaigns have relied on a re-enactment of drug dealers carting cash in suitcases, law enforcement video of candidates in compromising positions and a slow-motion shot that likens one candidate to a monster movie maniac.

So bitter are the ads and allegations in the race for the 25th Congressional District that the fate of two television commercials could wind up in court.

With a few exceptions -- most notably, state Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander's upbeat "one tough grandma" commercial -- advertising has ranged from the ludicrous to outright lies.

Osama bin Laden, whose picture has appeared in at least one mail-out, would feel right at home with the political terrorism assaulting Texans' sensibilities.

You know, I'd been wondering how I could work Osama bin-Laden into my campaign. It's too late now, but should I decide to run in 2006, who knows what the possibilities could be??

In the meantime, Texans will decide between the evil or the venal, the drug-runners or the insurance kingpins, the stupid or the merely ignorant...ah, I LOVE representative democracy, don't you??
