Catholic Archdiocese of Boston Mulls Bankruptcy Move
Cardinal Law clearly has demonstrated a pronounced lack of understanding of the Watergate Theorem. This holds that when attempting to lie, obfuscate, and juggle the truth, this tactic will work only for so long before the truth finally comes out. The head of the Boston Archdiocese has spent so long trying to protect his empire that he has forgotten what the Church is supposed to represent. The Catholic Church is not a business, and Cardinal Law is not the VP in charge of it's Boston operations. Cardinal Law heads a division of the Church that represents the hopes, dreams, and faith of Catholics in New England. For years, the Archdiocese has ignored the well-being of it's adherents in order to coddle priests who abused children. The time has come for the Archdioces to reap what it has sown for so many years.
The years of lying and denial are coming back to haunt the Archdiocese, and it's about time. While it is understandable that Cardinal Law would do what he has to in order to protect his Archdiocese, you'd think he could spare some concern for the 450+ Catholics who are suing the Archdiocese. Why is the financial survival of a religious corporate entity concern number one? Why not the well-being of the people harmed by years of neglect and abuse at the hands of those priests who were on the payroll the Archdiocese?
In the end, of course, this is not about religion, or the pain caused by years of leadership that enabled the abusers. It's about the money. Given the years of neglect and denial that enabled and fostered the predatory behavior of so many collar-wearing pedophiles, the Archidiocese of Boston deserves to have the flesh stripped from it's carcass. Filing bankruptcy, while an implicit admission of guilt, is simply a desperate man's way of attempting to avoid the consequences for his years of inaction, inattention, and complicity. Catholics deserve better.
