Serbia Blames Crime Group for Djindjic Killing
Serbia's prime minister assassinated: Death called start of dark era in region
Anyone familiar with the history and political climate of the former Yugoslavia would hardly be surprised by this tragedy. Having lived there, I'm only surprised that this sort of thing hasn't happened more frequently.
Being a politician in Serbia is not a good way to ensure yourself a long and healthy life. There is a strong underground criminal element fearful of any reforms that might damage their ability to do business as they see fit. With Djindjic gone, a message has been sent; what remains to be seen is how politicians will react.
Since most of the Serbian police is, if not on the take directly, then certainly susceptible to the temptation, it's not as if politicians can expect much protection. Imagine "Lonesome Dove" meeting "The Sopranos", and you might be close. Good luck, guys; you're going to need it.
