Time to make a difference

Friday, July 11: Spirit of Texas Food Drive

I'm going to reign in my cynicism for a moment, because Susan sent me a link to something that is both easy to do and supports a good cause.

HOUSTON – KHOU-TV Channel 11 will host its 16th annual Spirit of Texas Food Drive, on Friday, July 11, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. The food drive will take place at the Channel 11 studios at 1945 Allen Parkway. It will benefit the Houston Food Bank....

Non-perishable food donations will be accepted the week of July 7 through July 11 at the Channel 11 studios and Chase Bank branch locations. Cash and check donations are also being accepted at Chase Bank branch locations and area Kroger stores.

In addition to KHOU-TV, the Spirit of Texas Food Drive sponsors include: Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Kroger, JP Morgan Chase Bank, Reliant Energy, Pappas Restaurants and Newsradio 740 KTRH.

In 2002, the Spirit of Texas Food Drive generated more than 200,000 pounds of food and over $245,700 in cash donations.

Food and funds generated from the Spirit of Texas Food Drive will provide approximately seven weeks of service during this critical time of need.

The Houston Food Bank distributed more than 23 million pounds of food and other essentials to 500 hunger-relief programs in an 18-county service area in 2002.

Most of us wonder how we might be able to make a difference. Well, if you live in the Houston area, here is a way for you to do exactly that. Financial donations are especially useful, since in many cases the food has already been donated. What is often lacking is the money needed to transport that food to where it is needed.

And while you're at it, be thankful you're not living in North Korea....
