Kerry Signed Letter Backing Gay Marriage
John Kerry: A Navy Dove Runs for Congress
First, of all, I'd like to ask what relevance ANYTHING that John Kerry may have said or thought or called for in 1970 has to what is happening today. I'd say the same thing about George W. Bush. Hey, I called for more Frankenberry cereal in 1970; thankfully, THAT one hasn't come back to bite me yet. Of course, I'm not running for President, either.
Thirty-three years ago, John Kerry was a wild-eyed college student no doubt fired by a large helping of youthful idealism. It was a different world then, and there was a lot of that going around. Clearly, he is a different, and certainly more mature person 33 years later, as we hopefully all are. This sort of "breaking news" is neither breaking, nor is it particularly newsworthy.
The issue of George Bush's military service record (or lack of same) became a legitimate issue once he decided to put himself in a flight suit and land on a carrier deck. Using the military to build up one's political stock stock is a reprehensible act, particularly for some whose lies have cost 500+ young Americans their lives. He deserves to be called on the carpet for that travesty alone.
There are legitimate questions surrounding George W. Bush's (lack of) service record, simply because of the circumstances surrounding his securing a National Guard slot. He, is, after all, the Commander-in-Chief, and his service record deserves to be examined. Was Bush AWOL? That is a question that likely has no definitive answer, since it is so open to partisan bickering. Still, it is a much more legitimate question than anything John Kerry may or may not have said 33 years ago. John Kerry saw combat. He did not attempt to use his connections to avoid service. Can the same be said about George W. Bush? Don't be ridiculous.
As for what anyone said 33 years ago, give it a rest, willya? Character assassination should be beneath both parties, though I doubt that Republicans will pass on any opportunity to smear Kerry. It would be nice to think that we could have a legitimate debate about the issues of TODAY, but that might be hoping for a bit much in this day and age.
