'Tis a fitting tribute

I was going to let today speak for itself, but it is telling that here it is, both "April Fools Day" and "I'm Embarrassed By My President Day". I just LOVE symmetry, don't you??

While some will pass this off as just more partisan ranting coming from the Liberal Left, I cannot remember ever being embarrassed by a President before. I was by no means a fan or supporter of Ronald Reagan or Bush I, but they at least did not place their country in a position where it would be disrespected by most of the rest of the civilized world.

Why am I embarrassed by this President? Let me count the ways:

  1. I am embarrassed that this President used his bully pulpit to translate specious evidence on Iraq's alleged WMD program into a rationale for going to war. Shame on America for believing him
  2. I am embarrassed that this President's lies and deceptions have cost almost 600 brave American soldiers their lives.
  3. I am embarrassed that this President is able to find amusement and make light of his lies and deceit.
  4. I am embarrassed that this President has undone virtually all of the economic successes of the Clinton Administration. Surplus? What surplus??
  5. I am embarrassed that this President seems willing to do whatever it takes to win this election- including using slander, innuendo, and this gross misinterpretation of John Kerry's record.
  6. I am embarrassed that this President has allowed members of his Administration to engage in character assassination against those who spout anything other the the Party line about events surrounding 9.11.
  7. I am embarrassed that this President, above all else, just doesn't seem to understand (or care) what his policies are doing to this country.
I just saw an ad by MoveOn.org that sums up my feelings in one simple, and yet meaningful phrase:

GEORGE W. BUSH: A FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP

Faithful readers of TPRS will have noticed by now that I have never used the words "President George W. Bush". To my way of thinking, Presidents don't ascend to office by stealing an election and then having that theft validated by their friends on the Supreme Court. Presidents lead by example. Presidents should use their bully pulpit to work toward making our world a better place to live. Presidents do not recognize and deal with threats ex post facto.

George W. Bush may get his mail at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but that hardly makes him a legitimate President. Ultimately, I can only speak for myself, but there is reason enough for ALL of us to be embarrassed by this President.
