South Texas snow for sale on eBay
South Texans Hope to Cash in on Snow
If a Grilled Cheese sandwich can fetch $28,000 on eBay (lending credence to the theory that there is a sucker born every minute), it would stand to reason that the market for the wierd and unusual is rather overheated, no?
On Christmas Eve, South Texas experience anywhere from 1-4 inches of snow (yes, snow). For some places, it was the first measurable snowfall THIS CENTURY. Of course, this wouldn’t be America if someone didn’t try to make a buck off this, right?
BROWNSVILLE- Some South Texans are hoping to turn a rare snowfall into some cold cash.
A 23-year-old Brownsville man has put a three-pound snowball he collected during an unprecedented Rio Grande Valley Christmas showfall on the eBay auction block.
Brownsville received 1.5 inches of snow Christmas Eve night and Christmas morning, its first measurable since Feb. 14, 1895, according to the National Weather Service.
“It’s an amazing historical event,” seller Oscar J. Garza told The Brownsville Herald. “They’ve been selling so much stuff on eBay I thought I’d get a good laugh and if I make a little money out of it, oh well. That’s why I put a ‘buy it now’ price of $5,000.”
As if that wasn’t silly enough, how about an even more over the top example of the quick for a quick buck run rampant?
Another seller was asking $250,000 for a bowl of Christmas snow from Corpus Christi, sold “as is” without warranty. After six days, there were still no takers.
Hey, imagine that; no one wants to spend $250,000 for a bowl of South Texas snow. Personally, it’s difficult to imagine anyone spending two bucks for it, much less a quarter-million dollars.
Yes, it was a magical Christmas Eve. South Texas had a White Christmas. It’s something that likely will not happen again in our liftimes. But is it worth $5,000? Or $250,000? I suppose that depends on whether or not our erstwhile snow merchants can find a sucker…er, a buyer.
