Not so much fun when the tables are turned, is it?

DeLay decries ‘politics of personal destruction’: Letter alleges a liberal assault on conservatives

You almost feel bad for how screwed this guy is, because usually when someone wants to beat this kind of a rap, the person they bribe is Tom DeLay.

When I first read this piece in this morning’s Houston Chronicle, I laughed so hard that I almost spewed coffee on my laptop’s screen. The chutzpah and the hypocrisy inherent in DeLay’s whiny letter are beyond comical. After years of demonizing Liberals, after hounding Bill Clinton when he was in office, DeLay finds himself in the exact same predicament that he and his fellow Conservatives worked so hard to place Clinton into. Ah, paybacks are a bitch, eh?

They are few things more blindly hypocritical than a politician caught up in his own web of deceit. DeLay has clearly determined that the best offense is a good defense, but he’s ignored the reality that his attack-dog posture only makes him look desperate. Rather than honestly addressing the issues, DeLay has chosen to attack Prosecutor Ronnie Earle as a partisan political hack. Et tu, Brutus?

Not only does being a Republican mean never having to say you’re sorry (or be held accountable for your transgressions), it also means having the perfect right to rail against those who would attempt to hold you accountable- especially if they’re Democrats.

For those of y’all who watched DeLay’s performance in last October’s Clear Lake debate against Richard Morrison, you’d know exactly what I’m talking about. Tom DeLay is a man who has deemed himself untouchable, and he inspires such fear and hero-worship in those around him that, until now, that has been the literal truth. Ah, yes…karma can be a real bitch, no??…and there are few folks around these parts with worse karma than Tom DeLay.

AUSTIN - U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay sent constituents a letter Thursday calling the prosecution against him the “politics of personal destruction,” and said he has come under attack because he’s been a strong advocate of conservative causes.

The letter is the second the Sugar Land Republican has sent to supporters since he was first indicted in Travis County on election law violations last month. DeLay has repeatedly said he is a victim of political persecution by District Attorney Ronnie Earle, a Democrat.

“Because of their decade of defeat, Democrats have now dropped to the least common denominator ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ the politics of personal destruction,” DeLay said, using the same defense mounted by former President Clinton during his impeachment.

DeLay said the prosecution against him is part of a larger pattern of “liberals” using the criminal justice system against conservatives.

“What we’re fighting is so much larger than a single court case or a single district attorney in Travis County,” DeLay said. “We are witnessing the criminalization of conservative politics.”

Of course, what DeLay conveniently ignores is that he is charged with money laudndering, which actually IS a crime. It has nothing to do with DeLay’s cries of persecution. Am I the only one who finds it endlessly entertaining that DeLay has co-opted Hillary Clinton’s “politics of personal destruction” mantra? How craven can one person be? How low can one person sink? In the case of Tom DeLay, I have a feeling that he hasn’t even begun to plumb the depths.
