Police apologize, drop charge against Sheehan

WASHINGTON (AP) - Capitol Police dropped a charge of unlawful conduct against anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan Wednesday and offered apologies to her as well as a congressman’s wife after they were ejected from President Bush’s State of the Union address for wearing T-shirts with war messages.

Oops…our bad…. I suppose it’s good that the Capitol Police figured out that they may have overreacted just a wee bit, but it’s interesting that the only person that they arrested and harrassed was Cindy Sheehan, who just happens to be an outspoken opponent of Our Glorious Leader and everything he stands for. Beverly Young, the wife of Florida Congressman C.W. Young, was removed from the House chambers, but not arrested. Of course, Rep. Young is a Republican and Bevery Young was wearing a t-shirt bearing the slogan “Support Our Troops”. And it’s not like Beverly Young would have been seen as a threat.

So why was Sheehan arrested and Young not? Well, could it be as simple as the fact that Sheehan is a vocal opponent of Our Glorious Leader and Young is a vocal supporter? Isn’t it convenient that Sheehan was arrested and harrassed by Capitol Police long enough so that she wasn’t in the House Chambers during Our Glorious Leader’s speech? And now the Capitol Police just want to let bygones be bygones?

A more cynical person might see a conspiracy bent on silencing dissent at work here. Sure, you might say, but what about Beverly Young? Well, I’m not about to defend her being harrassed and removed from the House chambers, but I do find it interesting that she was neither arrested nor charged with a crime in the manner Sheehan was. This is all just a wee bit too convenient to be credible.

Land of the free? Freedom of speech and expression? Sure…as long as you’re a Republican and a supporter of Our Glorious Leader and his endless war of occupation in Iraq.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
