Abramoff sentenced to 70 months in prison

MIAMI - Assuring the judge he is working to become “a new man,” disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced today to nearly six years in prison for committing fraud in the purchase of a fleet of gambling boats. He will remain free while helping prosecutors with a vast bribery investigation involving members of Congress.

It’s been said (by me, actually) that karma can be a real bitch. Yes, it’s true; what goes around really does tend to come around…and at the risk of tossing too many cliches around, let me just say that I’m as happy as a pig in $#!% that perhaps the most corrupt and venal Republican lobbyist in recent history is about to become someone’s girlfriend.

My hope is that Abramoff’s sentence will at least set the American sheeple to thinking about the corrupt nature of the Republican party. Yes, money is the mother’s milk of politics, and Jack Abramoff is one of the major reasons that Republicans have been too fat and too happy for too long.

We should not forget, of course, that Democrats are hardly immune to the siren song of the Almighty Buck. Politics is hardly the final resting place for the virtuous and the moral. Then again, Republicans were the ones who rode into Washington on the white horses five years ago pledging that things would be different. They were going to restore honor and dignity to the White House, and they were going to take care of the People’s business in an upright and transparent manner. Yeah, right…how’s that been working out for you?

Remember, power corrupts. Absolute power makes you a Republican.
