Who says crime doesn't pay?

Demand for Duke lacrosse gear soars

Just when you thought the Duke Lacrosse team’s scandal couldn’t possibly become any wierder, well, get a load of this.

Sales of Duke Lacrosse gear has soared since the alleged rape hit the news. I’ve actually been to the on-campus bookstore at Duke, and you can buy shirts and other assorted memorabilia emblazoned with the logos of different Duke sports. I myself have a Duke Golf shirt, and apparently these souvenirs are quite popular.

I don’t pretend to know what may or may not have happened, but it seems to me that no matter what the outcome of this case, more than a few lives are going to be, if not ruined, then certainly severly complicated. So much vitriol and ignorance has been fueled by the emotions involved on both sides that the truth of the matter, whatever it may be, is at present really beside the point. It’s no longer about the truth; it’s about pushing a particular agenda, one that in the Durham area and increasingly nationwide seems to be split along racial lines. And for more than a few people, it’s about making a few bucks.

I suppose the one good thing to come out of this mess is that at least someone is making money off it, eh? God, I just LOVE America….
