Panem et circenses as policy

Rich assails administration over attacks on the press

White House Executes New York Times

Bush vs. New York Times

12 DOWN: TOP SECRET WAR PLANS, 36 ACROSS: TREASON

Who died and left you president?

THE BLABBERMOUTHS BACKPEDAL

No sooner were the flag burners hustled offstage than a new traitor was unveiled for the Fourth: the press. Public enemy No. 1 is The New York Times, which was accused of a “disgraceful” compromise of national security (by President Bush) and treason (by Rep. Peter King of New York and the Coulter amen chorus). The Times’ offense was to publish a front-page article about a comprehensive American effort to track terrorists with the aid of a Belgian consortium, Swift, which serves as a clearinghouse for some 7,800 financial institutions in 200 countries.

It’s almost as if you can tell that Republicans know they’re screwed. Look in their eyes, and you can see it. They know Iraq is a clusterf—k, and yet their stars are so closely hitched to Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader that they cannot afford to break ranks. They can’t afford to take the political risks involved in asking the questions that a responsible elected public servant should be asking when policy goes awry. In this case, American servicemen and women are dying in a war with no apparent purpose or plan, and Republicans continue to hew to the mantra of “staying the course”.

So what do you do when you’re stuck with the distasteful reality of having to defend a policy which you know in your heart of hearts to be indefensible? Easy; you create a diversion. Find something that you can blow up from something to nothing and that grabs sheeple at an emotional level. So why does the New York Times make such an appealing target? Well, they just published a solid piece of journalism on the government use’s of the SWIFT program in th search for terrorists. Note that the Times didn’t disclose any operationally sensitive information, but the mere revelation of the program is enough to make Right-wing nutjobs foam at the mouth. Before you know it, then, the New York Times goes from being the Newspaper of Record to the worst example of the “Liberal Media” known to mankind (Perhaps Fraulein Gasraum was right; perhaps Timothy McVeigh should have blown up the New York Times building; Conservatives would have hailed him as a hero of the Reich.).

Of course, the fact that nothing could be farther from the truth means nothing to those Republicans looking for any excuse to deflect the attention of the American sheeple from the real problems we face. It’s good to know that our elected representatives are honest, upright politicians willing to do the right thing in the right way (not), isn’t it? Sure, the war in Iraq is a mess, but until we deal with REAL problems- gay marriage, flag burning, prayer in public schools, and the traitorous Liberal Media- how can we hope to make any real progress towards restoring decency and righteousness in the Vaterland Homeland?

Still glad you voted Republican?
