And now, a moment to savor what's been a long time coming....

For the first time in…well, what seems like half of forever, I feel as I’m not looking up to see the bottom. See, I can remember 1994 like it was yesterday, with Newt Gingrich and his Contract On With America…and the numerous Republican promises that “things are going to be different.” Well, things WERE different, in that Republicans produced perhaps the meanest, most arrogant, and most corrupt Congress in this nation’s history. Republicans acted as if they were to the manor born, and before too long they came to see their majority in Congress as their birthright and not a gift bestowed upon them by the electorate.

Gone are the days when people spoke of Democratic prospects with phrases like “They couldn’t get laid in a whorehouse with a fistful of twenties” (I’d take credit for that one, but Jon Stewart beat me to it….). Now we have at least two years to try and restore a semblance of sanity and accountability to government.

I’m going to resist the temptation to gloat, though no one could blame me, or any other Democrat, should I decide to give in to that temptation. This has been a long time coming, and there’s a part of me that cannot wait to hear the weeping and gnashing of teeth from the other side of the aisle. I don’t want to see Democrats using the same tactics Republicans have for the past 12 years, but a man can dream, no??
